Break in period

Does anyone know if the first oil service is really at 15k miles? To me it sounds a little high no matter what oil they are using? If it is at 15k how many are thinking about paying for one earlier?

Yes, it is. Unless you put on less than 6k miles per year, in which case you would qualify for a low-mile oil change at the 1 year mark.

Many BMW owners opt to have mid-interval oil changes done.

Correct. This is standard on many cars these days. As Bill stated, just do one in between and you should be fine. It's fairly easy to change your own oil too.

I'm in the camp that 15k is too long between changes. I've done it every 7500 on my 330i and I feel good knowing that I won't face the sludge monster now that I'm in 120k+ mile territory.

Now that there is no longer a dipstick, is there a way to suck out the oil instead of draining it from the drain plug in the oil pan? How does the dealer perform an oil change?

Drain plug. That's where the oil sits when it's not being circulated.
Then empty out the oil filter.
