Service indicator

Looks like mine is wrong for some reason. Since yesterday, the 'Service' light on startup has turned from orange to red and it's showing 01/11 as service date.

Now my cars only 5 months old with just over 4,000 miles on.

Dealer visit or can/should I reset myself? Normally I'd go to the dealer and let them do it but the one I bought from is 20 odd miles away and can't be bothered to go to the local one (not a fan).

These service indicators are normally quite clever, monitors a few things around the car. Something is up, take it to any dealer for a check, don't want to invalidate your warranty. Did you know they can get a lot of info off just your key. Last time I was in to fit my winters the service guy told me how cold it was outside and the distance of my last trip, all off the key!

I think this may just be normal. A new car initially needs more frequent checks. As Mario said, do not attempt to do anything yourself. 20+ miles is far but take it to the dealer - rather be safe than sorry.

Just waiting for a call back from the dealer.

Yeah the amount of info from the key is quite scary! Shame we don't have personal ones that we could pop the key in and check what they've done when they have the car in!

my BMW dealer saids (and i did it) that the first service oil is on
5000km (3100miles) did you did that service??
..because it's new engine has several chips and need to change the oil engine in the first kilometres/miles to go, is a directive of engineers from the BMW

Sounds very strange, my car told me today that it was time for service after 26000 km...

index change oil can not turn up until to 20000-25000km (depending on usage) but are routinely changed oils to the first 5000km , because the engine is new and want to leave burrs that are left inside the engine!

I´m not sure I understand what you mean. I cant be supposed to change oil if the car does not tell me to

Or du you mean that it is good to make an extra oilchange the first time???

Most modern diesel engines don't need an oil change before 15000 kms. Some go as far as 30000, including hi-pressure, common-rail direct injection modern mills.

However, regularly check the oil for the first 3000 kms, as a brand new engine DOES burn some oil during break-in.

Dear Aris,
the oil change issue is something that concerned me some months ago. My dealer was very straight and clear. The oil change will take place when the BC say so! No need for extra oil change before the limit of 30000km or two years and this is a bmw rule that you can surely trust. All other things are as if you want to pay some extra money for the good life of your car's engine. (of course you can change oil and filter every 5000km for all the life of your car. This is better than changing every 30000km. And every 1000km is even better - for the dealer!)
Thank you

So basically, the car had the wrong MOT date programmed in.

Did not even know they put that into the car, a first for me. Thanks for giving us the heads up.

Actually thinking about it, it did happen on my wife's Mini Clubman in 2008. The service light started to alert at 20000 km instead of 30000. Had to bring it to BMW in order to reprogram it properly.
