Glowplug warning light

Recently I've been having an issue where the glowplug warning light appears and the engine takes 20-30 seconds before it will start.

This has happened in above and sub-zero temperatures.

BMW are claiming this is normal and it's acceptable for the engine to take 30 seconds to start.

Surely 30 seconds is no an acceptable length of time???

Garage List
The Dodge diesel pickups we use at work sometimes take a full minute to heat before the light on the dash goes out. Usually only when the truck has sat over extended periods of time or if it's extremely cold. 30 seconds does seem long for the glow plug to heat up, maybe they need replacement.

Is the car still under warranty? If so they must take it in my opinion and at least read codes.

If out of warranty find a way to read error codes. People suggest it might be glow plug controller going bad.

I'm not familiar with diesels but it your engine is common rail direct injection it doesn't use the glow plugs for starting but for emissions reasons and during warm up phase.

20-30 seconds is a long time.
Since the colder weather has arrived mine is taking 2-3 seconds now with the coil displayed on the dash before engine cranks and starts. This happens first thing in the morning or late in the afternoon having not been used for a long while. Must admit I don't remember it doing this during the previous years I have had it - but I don't see 2-3 secs as a problem. Due to doing some shorter journeys my battery has been struggling so did wonder if the low battery was causing it to take longer to start. It's lovely having heated seats and all but no good on short journeys. So the car started displayed "excessive battery drain" more recently and then a low battery warning but since keeping an eye on energy usage and doing some longer trips I've not seen anymore battery related warnings and car still takes 2-3 secs before it cranks over and starts from cold.
