x2.81 Mileage in Eco Mode - only 20 mpg after 3K miles?!?

I am majorly bummed out about the POOR highway mileage I am seeing so far with the tiny 'efficient' engine x2.8i X1.

When I am in Eco Pro mode, I only save 5 miles per tank? Are you kidding me? And it turns the car into a completely non-fun Asian-mobile.

I am used to lugging-low-rpm eco driving in my 55mpg TDI - but that is way more fun to drive than the dog-slow can't-creep-out-of-its-own-way eco pro mode X1.

I could live with eco pro - if it was worth it and actually amounted to something. I could live with it if I got the EPA promised 33mpg highway by using it. But no.

I ONLY GET 20.6 mpg to date!! 2K miles of that was in Europe using the superior Euro gas, and 1K miles here with US gas. Almost none of Europe miles were EcoPro, much of the US miles so far are EcoPro. I live in a rural setting, mostly highway miles, no stop-n-go city driving.

The car sucks down gas like an Escalade. Not at all what I expected. I was ready for a range-per-tank drop from my hardly-ever-have-to-fill-up 800-mile-per-tank VW TDI. But I was not expecting having to fill up the tank TWICE just on ONE ski trip!

So I drove all the way to northern VT (3+ hours both ways) exclusively in eco pro mode. It was dog slow and not a fun drive. I saved a grand total of... 13 miles!! And I only averaged 20.3 mpg for the trip!! If I'm in such a non-green gas-guzzling car... I might as well have some fun driving it NOT in eco mode.

I also have the run-flat tires inflated to almost the max pressure on the tires (45/48psi). I should be seeing the EPA 33 mpg easily, but am not.

ECO PRO is a disappointment and seems like a HUGE waste - for the mere 5-13 miles saved it is simply not worth the poor driving experience.

20 mpg to date of mostly highway miles is MUCH worse than I expected from this car.

Am I alone with such poor X1 mileage??

Wow, that's certainly disappointing. My wife in her 35i gets 17.2 mpg on her very short city commute, it creeps up to about 18.5 mpg if we use it much on the weekends, and hwy mileage has been in the mid 26's. I will say that our previous car, an N54 135i loosened up significantly until about 8k miles, so give it time, but overall, your numbers do sound low.

As I already said elsewhere, ECO PRO is a joke on the 35i, but I assumed it was better geared for your 28i's, maybe not.

One last thing, EU gas isn't any better than ours, they just use a different octane rating that results in higher numbers.

ECO PRO is a joke. I will not dispute that and don't bother with it anymore.

However, the BMW computer is equally as flawed. Not only is the speedometer a few MPH too high, but the MPG calculation is way low. My first tank of gas showed 21.7 MPG on the computer but my own calculation showed 24.2. My second tank showed 23.0 when my calculation showed 25.9. Do your own calculations.

Only a little over 1200 miles on a 35i, but I see 25mpg hwy running 80-85mph. Not sure why your mileage so low.

I've used Eco Pro on two hwy trips and got 31 mpg at 80-85 mph.

Hmm. Interesting. I have simply trusted the trip computer numbers so far. Annoying if one cannot.

I never had a trip computer on the TDI, and was always bothered that an eco car would not tell you the mileage numbers directly. I always had to calculate them by hand.

Looks like I'll have to do the same on the X1, just to correlate the numbers it's giving me.

It would not surprise me if the computer mileage numbers are low. You can FEEL the dialed-back throttle response and gas sipping almost immediately when you hit the Eco Pro button. It FEELS like it is saving more than 5 miles per tank (the usual "miles saved" number it gives me).

Guess I'll have to wait until my next tank top-off to see what the true numbers are.

Same Here!! I'm extremely disappointed!! 23.5mpg with 9500 miles on our '13 2.8i. 90% hwy driving. Eco pro...joke start stop..anyoning I would have bought another X3 if the mileage was going to be like this. One the the main reason for purchasing an X1 was the 22/33 rating. I've brought it back to the dealer with no answers. I've contacted BMW CS...no anwsers. I'm going to continue till I get the right answers or car. Ps. this is not the first BMW(13).

Just to be sure: did you reset the computer when you got on the highway? Also need to do that with average speed.

Stop start or ASS will soon be on all BMW's so there is nothing you can do about it but hit the button to disable it. ASS is not Eco Pro which simply kicks you up to higher gears to keep you below 1500 rpms. Two different animals and both can be disabled. I'm getting about 22 in city driving with virtually no highway, yes it's not 24-26 but its 3.5 mpg better than our 2007 X3 got with a 3.0 6. Hwy mileage is significantly better, we used to get 22.5 to 23 on the X3 at 80 mph but get close to 31 now due to the transmission gearing. Running about 2100 rpms at 75-80 which.

I've been disappointed with the mileage as well. Very disappointed in fact! This is the first vehicle I've ever owned that I've been unable to attain the highway rating. I haven't even hit 30 mpg with 100% highway driving. A little over 29 was the best I've managed in ideal conditions. Now that we're seeing cold temps consistently, I'm barely breaking 25 in mostly highway travel, which is exactly what my wife gets with her Q5 (EPA 20/27). Of course, my speedometer reads 4 to 5 mph too high, so I adjust my driving speed accordingly. I have calculated my mileage myself on multiple occasions and have found the car's trip computer to be remarkably accurate.

Hyundai/Kia has gotten a lot of attention for misleading mpg claims, and now Ford is under the microscope for potentially doing the same. Interesting that I have yet to read anything about BMW - even after the EPA forced them to lower the ratings on the 3-Series. Just a matter of time?

I did a trip up to NH a couple weeks ago in eco pro the majority of the time, all highway going 80 mph with a few slow spots and got 28mpg. I had 3k miles at the time. I think the computer said something like saved an extra 12miles while in eco pro. I hate eco pro, almost never use it now.

I'm about to leave work so I'll check when I get out to the car, but I think we have two levels of these numbers. One is a trip computer, which is resettable so I did (breaking up before Europe vs after Europe), and another one that displays my mpg and average speed to date (all miles so far). So I have three numbers:

Europe only: 20.6 (reset)
US only: 20.3 (ongoing)

Total since mile 0: 20.4 (ongoing)

Perhaps both levels are resettable, but I only reset the trip computer one.

I have not visited a city in the US yet, most of my miles are all rural highway: driving back from dealer delivery, driving to VT, driving to ski area, driving back home, etc. If I reset to only the stretch of driving 55mph on the highway, that would inflate the numbers (missing the 0-55 start, etc). I think my numbers are as close to all highway as you can get. And still it's lower than either EPA city/hwy number. Yes it was cold out, but c'mon BMW. My TDI on winter blend kero+diesel did fine in cold, gas should do even better as it is not diluted down to prevent diesel gelling/freezing.

Maybe they sneaked a V6 under the hood on me?

Europe was vacation and thus mostly sport mode fun (Stelvio Pass, passing people on Autobahn, etc). US has been EcoPro mostly - boring. Yet the mileage seems the same for both. Both bad, but seems to suggest that EcoPro just feels slow WITHOUT improving the mileage. Perhaps it's dumping all the gas that's not going to the engine onto the ground, sigh...

I was very concerned when I first read reports about bad fuel economy compared to the EPA numbers. However, I have to say that my findings are MUCH different. I have a sDrive28i and have only 880 miles on it. On the highway, I do not have any problem getting over 30mpg.

The last trip I made on the highway I reset my computer as I was getting onto the highway. At the end of the 40 minute trip across the long highway with both Eco Pro and cruise control set @ 75 MPH and some slowing and speeding up to get around cars, I was able to manage 39 mpg. After that trip I did about 20 minutes of city driving and parked the car 3 times and then did the same highway drive over again to get back home. When I got home my computer read 29 mpg for the entire trip.

I live in New Orleans and the super bowl is in town, so traffic has been terrible. My commute to work every morning has doubled to 45 minutes and the majority of this is parking lot style stop and go traffic. The X1 without auto start stop enabled, like any car, will guzzle gas and drastically hurt your mpg numbers. However, because of auto start stop I am still able to maintain a combined mpg of around 25 with about 70% city and 30% of that being highway miles.

What I have noticed, however, is that if you drive around with the gas pedal to the floor, or even 2/3 to the floor, you will consume a lot of fuel. These cars seem to be very efficient and in the right situations and with the right driving style I can very closely achieve the EPA estimates. I do believe they are slightly over estimated, but I think 22/30 might be what we are looking at real world, at least according to my car, so far.

They say breaking in the car should turn out better mileage, and my wife's E90 did just that, so chances are I might be able to achieve the 24/34 numbers BMW set once I am broken in.

Oh, and one last thing. I disagree with those of you who say Eco Pro is useless. If you can bare with using Eco Pro mode, you should see better fuel economy. I know I do. It doesn't make the car fun to drive by any means, but it does what it should in my car.

All of the above was done while using Shell Premium 93 Octane (contains 10% ethanol) gasoline.

I only reset the MPG reading each full up. This is different from the trip reset button. Select mode with the button on the end of the turn signal stalk. Hold button to reset.

I am driving an F30 2012 328i at the moment (belongs to my parent...swapped them my X1 for a while). ECO PRO on the X1 is a JOKE in comparison!!!

On the 328i, I do believe the computer MPG is lower than actual but there is an EfficientDynamics iDrive Display that graphs MPG performance between modes used (I can choose from between 15 mins and 8 hrs of data I believe). The instrument cluster is color and there is a dynamic ECO PRO display letting you know just how ECO you are driving at any given moment. (All the X1 does is inverse the ECO PRO illumination on the cluster when you are not driving ECOnomically.) There is even analog style display (SportDisplay) of HP and Torque with peak hold! I had trouble finding pictures so all are not US (I do not want to go to the garage and take any tonight!).

ECO PRO accelerates anemically on the street unless you stomp on the pedal with both the 328i and the X1 28i (I would never use this mode by choice on the street in either vehicle). However, throttle mapping is noticeably reduced with the X1 in ECO PRO but on the 328i throttle mapping is the same in ECO PRO and COMFORT (noticeably better than ECO PRO and marginally better than D/Drive on the X1 IMO). This makes freeway driving much more frustrating in ECO PRO in the X1. The 328i accelerated from 70 - 80 in about 5 seconds with marginal additional throttle input. I have to stomp on the pedal or paddle downshift in the X1 to do this (which makes me not use ECO PRO ever in the X1!). ECO PRO is tolerable with highway driving on the 328i.

BMW really needs to at least implement the iDrive features from the F30 on the X1. Also, they need not reduce the throttle mapping when moving from D/Drive down to ECO PRO on the X1.

Yes, I agree with 2Bims. You have to reset computer before a new trip. Other wise, the mpg displayed on computer is inaccurate. I got my X1 xDrive28i a week ago and have driven about 100 mile since then, mostly highway driving. The iDrive computer shows about 21 mpg on average. I do not believe the number, because the cluster gauge (Current fuel consumption) often displays 35 mpg, if I keep 60 - 70 mph. I did a test for highway fuel consumption. Before going to highway, I reset the computer trip. I did 30 miles highway driving without Eco Pro, keeping speed at 60-70 mph. I got 27.8 mpg on iDrive computer. I am satisfied with the result. After the car is break in, I am confident that I can achieve 30+ (if not 33 per EPA) mpg.

I'm driving the RWD version and on a 800 mile trip, 95% freeway at 75-85mph with no use of EcoPro and no attempt to save fuel other than keeping the revs down because I was still breaking the car the computer said 30mpg outbound and 29mpg on the way back. There was a drop of 1,000 feet outbound with a climb of 1,000 feet on the return that probably accounts for the slight milage difference. Very pleased with that result. I bought the car because it was fun to drive. If the mileage estimate had been 4-5mpg less I still would have bought it.

FWIW the computer says my overall average is 24mpg. That is probably 75% city driving.

If you want MPG ratings like the sticker shows, then you need to drive the vehicle close to the way they did in performing those tests.

http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/fe_test_schedules.shtml

Note for the Hwy test, average speed was 48.3 MPH, so they're probably running it around 55 mph.

Also another decent article on Edmunds about rated mpg.

The 328i EcoPro display screens seem really helpful. It clearly shows the differences between Eco vs Comfort vs Sport.

I have noticed this too. If I push the gas pedal beyond the half-way mark, the instantaneous MPG needle drops from mid-20's right down to below 12 mpg (and it stays pegged there - it 'feels' like it's getting 5mpg by the force of the needle travel - it wasn't close to stopping at 12 and the gauge stops there).

In Eco Mode the car doesn't accelerate even in the most anemic way, until you push the gas pedal beyond the 2/3 point.

sDrive 28i here. Think I am just under 2K miles (purchased 11/23). I have never reset the MPG reading. I live in Los Angeles and have a fairly bad commute, especially in late afternoon rush hour. I use Ecopro from time to time, but not consistently.

MPG reading shows 26.1.

That's better than my 2006 Lexus IS250, which came rated 24/32 as I recall, but consistently got 22-24 in L.A. driving. On true highway trips, it would get just over 30.

I'd say I am a very happy X1 driver, but I am also deeply superstitious and don't want to jinx myself...

5k miles over here. 27mpg city; around 32 or so when on the highway. Not using eco-pro either.

Your numbers are very low.

I just completed my Sales Experience Survey.

What features do you feel can be improved by BMW engineering? Please explain why.

"ECO PRO - throttle response & iDrive informational displays very disappointing in comparison to F30 328i. EfficientDynamics and SportDisplay info screens need to be ported into X1 iDrive software. ECO PRO tips option appears available but does nothing on X1."

I gave Shelly BMW perfect marks but requested BMW corporate contact me.
