I has been said that it is a newer 6sp ZF auto than was used in back in the N54 vehicles.

Both are listed as the ZF GA6HP19Z, with the obvious addition of the 4 Wheel Drive designation for the X1. So it's not that.
I'm guessing it has more to do with final drive ratios. |

Then again, a Prius will likely use even more gas than either in those situations. I almost wish EPA would stop giving estimates, because people don't grok the small print saying that actual fuel consumption varies with driving style and conditions, and might differ substantially from the estimates. It differs in different ways for different cars. If your driving gives 60% of the estimates for one car and 90% for another, that doesn't mean the estimates are wrong for the first, but that the second car might be better suited for your driving style or conditions. |

No offense, even though we all have the same car either x28i or x35, all our driving styles and roads are different so the mileage is gonna vary.
To the folks who are complaining about the x28i mileage, perhaps drive more smartly and you will see your car getting close to the estimated fuel economy. city driving: 1. No hard acceleration from a dead stop (try to keep it at 2500rpm max) 2. Learn to take your foot off the gas pedal... if you see a red light, and sometimes if you are lucky, you don't have to brake and you still have momentum to re-accelerate not from a deadstop from the traffic light. highway driving: 1.If you brake on a highway, then I'm speechless... 2. Try to keep your speed as consistent as possible by setting the cruise control 3. If you gonna overtake semis', please do it when you have the inner corner of a corner or on uphill road when the truck is losing speed so you don't have to gas much. Efficient overtaking! And if you say you don't do any of the above because you drive an BMW/ you don't wanna drive like an granny, well the estimated fuel economy is achieved under perfect condition, no dead stop, no re-acceleration and within the speed limit. My city mileage for my x28i is around 28-29mpg. Just got my highway mileage 32.7mpg coming back from a 3000 miles road trip in the U.S Oh yea, the poor highway mileage might also due to high speed. Say the speed limit is 70mph, then you are spinning at 1900rpm, many of us do 5mile above the speed limit, that probably makes it 2000rpm, let alone highways that have speed limit 80mph, then you are over 2000rpm which is definitely not efficient. If you are running at 60mph then you are spinning at under 1500rpm, I promise you you will get the estimated highway fuel economy. Last edited by bill1963; 05-14-2013 at 06:16 PM.. |

I think 90% plus of the complaints are for city driving. So many people have got over 30 on true hwy driving and that's where the 8 speed shines with the low rpms. My X1 city mileage is lower than I expected at about 21.5 but its better than my E93 335 which is 17.5 and the 2007 X3 which was about 18 city. Coming from a Mini Clubman S I guess my expectation was a little high but even the Clubman S only got 32.5 hwy compared to 30.5 we got on our two hwy trips in the X1. I have to admit the thing handles really good and has great power in the city or hwy so I'm happy.
