Advice on buying used X1
Hi Guys, my wife is looking to get a used X1.
Are there any common issues I should be looking out for? What specific option to avoid (or must have)? Thanks! |

These are REALLY expensive in Toronto, i'd be keeping a close eye on GLA's. Q3's and even the little lincoln as their new price points are not THAT far off new X1 territory.

Glazier silver exterior, black interior. Has premium pkge and lighting package + lightly tinted windows. 16K Kms currently. Reason for selling: Have 2008 1-series cabrio (for summer) and 2013 X1 (for winter). Replacing both with new 2-series xDrive cabriolet (best of both worlds in one vehicle). X1 purchased and went into service March 2013. X1 is in mint condition: no accidents, no dents, no scratches. Willing to sell for small premium over BMW dealer wholesale offer (which is at least $4K - 5K below AutoTrader prices for comparably equipped, mileage and condition 2013 X1. PM sent to OP

I am not sure as of now as i just joined the BMW universe but it's usually electrical gremlins with these things no? Expensive electrical gremlins.
I'd wait another 6 months or so as the three year leases come are done and supply lifts a little. |

sDrive28i, xDrive28i, or xDrive35i? That'd help...

All options are nice to have, but in my experience the most desirable options are:
- technology package (the base car has no infotainment screen) - heated seats or cold weather package - lighting package (if you frequently driving in dark/mountain roads) - ultimate package (if you want any two packages, e.g. tech and premium or tech and driver assistance, it just makes sense to get the ultimate for better value) - sport package (nice seats and contrast stitching) - paddle shifters (no brainer at $120, but probably you have to order a car to get them) I rank them in this order in terms of desirability. |

I'd dumb it down further, infotainment screens are a health hazard IMHO, 27 clicks to change the radio station, insanity.
I'd just want the following .... - leather - moon roof - blutooth - stock 17 inch wheels for ride comfort - heated everything Done. |

In my personal experience cars with no screen/navigation are much less desirable in used market. The screen/navigation makes it easier/safer to drive or change radio station.

Agree more desirable but safer? It's the ultimate form over function, nothing is easier than a knob or wheel controls. ALT/CTRL/DEL actions to make simple changes are crazy.
Jumped in a friends Q5, jesus H, you have to click on radio, then scroll the little central knob over to station then cycle through the stations ... crazy. |

This is the first car I've owned with heated steering wheel, and it's been great with recent cold weather. It comes with the "cold weather" package, go figure...

Also had an E46 (and an E85 and E83) and understand the common issues to that platform.
I've got an E82 and E84 that share the N55, and (3.5 years and counting) have not had any problems so far. Unfortunately, it's probably too early to tell about things like window regulators, evaporators, water pumps, etc. Body-wise, this has a lot in common with the e91, so that might be a good place to troll for issues. On the minus side, I can tell you that many things are going to be much more expensive. Intelligent (clutched) alternator, electric water pump, (turbo if 35i), battery change requires coding, no @#$%*! dipstick. |

Don't buy
My advice would be not to buy any X1. I have a 2014 X1 and it's the 11th BMW I've owned. It is the only one of these 11 that I cannot recommend. In their attempt to go down market, BMW seems to have forgotten what makes a BMW a BMW. The car has more rattles than a 1959 Edsel (if you're under 50- look it up), the a/c only works really well when it's not too hot out, the steering is totally lacking in road feel and it corners like a 1981 Oldsmobile. I can't wait until my lease is over!

I wish the car a was wee bit longer so that rear passengers can sit and my skis don't protrude onto the front arm rest.

Almost 30k miles on it with no complaints. Had an E85 Z4 that was a POS, and E83 X3 that was a dog compared to the X1. |
