I'm very surprised by all those comments ... And you live in L.A. ! That's something. I have a X1 28i with sport pkg so I got the great 18" and loving it a lot ! ANd i'm living in Québec where roads are often similar to a war zone (rough winter does that to roads ). I'm using 17" for my winter pkg but I can't wait to put the 18" back ... I guess I like it sportier than most

Los Angeles is bankrupt and the roads are in bad shape. Inconvenient truth.

Are you going to get a donut spare?

No donut for me. Full sized wheel in the trunk (standing not lying down).
Cell phone coverage is mostly missing around here, and the roads are rather bad. Right now, hitting chunks of ice is common enough.

And, as others have said, switching to 17" with more sidewall will help.

I'm not sure I'd want to change to softer rubber if living in L.A., unless having a big tire budget.

I myself prefer hard suspension and soft tires as opposed to soft suspension and hard tires. So I'm a bit worried that when I switch over from the 17" winter wheels to the 19" staggered summer ones, it's going to be rough, and I'll have to invest in yet another set of wheels. We'll see.
