Infant seats in X1

We are expecting our first child in 10 weeks and are shopping for infant seats, strollers, et cetera. We were hoping to have our new X1 to make sure the infant seat fits well in the rear seat of the car, however, the apparent delay in arrival of the car has made this difficult.

I remember other posters considered the X1 due to children, so I thought I'd ask: what brand/model of infant seat to people own? Any tips from prior experience?

Thanks a lot!

Garage List
My wife and are are in the same boat, expecting our 1st in a couple months. We're in the process of testing out various car seats / strollers etc. Will let you know here or via PM once we try fitting them in our X1

We purchased a Combi Coccoro for our X1. However, it is a convertible (so it doesn't have a base and stays installed in the car) and not an infant bucket seat.

You want an infant bucket with a short depth so you don't infringe on how far your front seat can come back. My recommendations are Cybex Aton or Chicco Keyfit.

We are due in June

We have the Stokke stroller and Peg Perego car seat. Both fits just perfect.

I really wanted to go with the X1 because of the performance rather going up to a X3 or X5. I measured the dimension of the baby seat and stroller to see if it is compatible with the X1 before purchasing the vehicle. Luckily it worked out for me.

Does this seat come with an infant insert or do you buy separately? Does the seat have an infant recline or only sit upright?

I had the same reasoning to go with the X1. I can testify the Peg Perego seats have a premium feel (and price) that seems fitting of a luxury car. They have both an infant bucket and a convertible seat w/infant insert and recline.

KeyFit 30 seat and Baby Jogger City Mini stroller, is what I use. With stroller in back, still have enough room for groceries and misc. stuff.

I mount the KF30 in the rear center using LATCH.

It is not safe to use LATCH/IsoFix in the center.

In the center seating position, the LATCH anchors are spaced at 16 inches which will let the child seat slide laterally in a crash and could be very dangerous. The center, over the seat upper LATCH tether can be used, but only with the center seat-belt securing the child seat.

I was told by a certified tech that proper seatbelt installation is as safe or safer than LATCH (LATCH has weight limits).

For newborn we used Peg Perego Primo Vaggio Rear Facing with the Base System. Fits perfect behind the passenger side but if you're front seat passenger is taller then 5'6 it might be hard to get comfortable. We wouldn't put it in the center because i'm too tall and I can't recline my seat back far enough (6'2).

For toddler we use the Diono Radian RXT - Nice Steel Frame but the footprint of the seat would allow you to do 3 across if you wanted (and had a dedicated center Latch connection). We do connect that in the center Frontfacing (when newborn is not with us) and our 3 yr old 38" boy fits fine and loves the panoramic roof. Love this seat.

This is a great thread! I also have both an X1 and a baby on the way, although I haven't yet picked out a car seat (waiting for the X1 to arrive first).

I'm a little apprehensive about how cramped the X1 will or won't be, but we don't often go on road trips, & I figured we could always get a roof-box if we absolutely needed extra space on rare occasions.

Glad I am not the only one with this question. We have a baby girl due in mid June. Today my wife had our 3 month old nephew and the seat he had with him was a Britax B-Safe. We made it a point to try the seat out in rear facing configuration in both my X1 and my wife's E90. The Britax fits my X1 in rear facing config by moving the front passenger seat up slightly, but when I say slightly I mean it. The passenger seat is still about 2-3 inches farther back than my driver seat is at my comfortable driving distance (I am 5' 10"). That means I could technically run the seat behind the driver side and not worry about moving my seat at all.

Also, for those wondering, the E90 fit the seat without any issues.

The last tip I have is order from AMAZON. Amazon has a 90 day FREE return policy on most Baby items. This includes infant seats. Order all of the seats you are considering, try them all out, keep the one you like best, and ship the rest back free of charge.

PS: Amazon is running a coupon until Feb 1. BABY2013 will give you 20% off baby items if you have Amazon Mom. If you don't have Amazon Mom you can sign up for a free 3 month trial and then use the coupon.

We need to start adding pics. Who's first?

Just FYI, MacLaren's BMW Buggy is now available (based on the Quest model). I think they stopped supporting baby buckets to turn this into a travel system, but these are some nice, mid-priced strollers. (We opted to move up a model and purchased the Techno XT, the Quest doesn't support infants...starts at 6 mos.).

Used a Chicco Keyfit 30 in a E90 M3 mounted behind passenger, didn't leave the most legroom but not the least either and it worked out fine so I'm sure it would even be better in an X1. Chicco also sells a snap and go frame that was very useful and well done, it's called the Keyfit Caddy. Seat is well made and felt very safe while baby was little, also very nice to take it in and out (handy for going to restaurants while they are still easy and not mobile).

Currently using a Britax Pavillion convertible seat (had Diono Radian but prefer this) and Bugaboo Bee stroller. All fits nicely in the M3 and X1 and now having driven it for a couple of days I can officially report that I am really liking this car. Given how much I love the sound of the V8 (and other things) in the M3 it says a lot that I do not feel ripped off when driving the X1 35. Not to get off topic but I am impressed with the nimble handling, road feel, power, linear throttle etc. Very glad we got this vs a big boxy true SUV, nice baby hauler

We have a Chicco Keyfit 30 for our 6 month old. I was concerned enough about the fit in the X1 (We were trading "down" from an '07 X3) that I brought the seat into the showroom and actually installed it in the X1.
I'm not sure how everyone else has "tons" of room - I had to move the passenger seat almost all the way forward to get the rear-facing seat to fit properly. My wife at 5'4" just barely fits in the front seat. Me, at 6'3", can't even get a leg in the car with the seat up that far!
I looked at putting the seat in the center rear, which gives the front seats some more room, but then leaves both sides of the rear seat unusable, and makes getting the seat in and out a bit harder.
Are you all sure you didn't accidentally buy X3's instead?

Cybex Aton is a few inches shorter in depth than the Keyfit. Unfortunately, Babys'R'Us stopped carrying it as of last year. They just opened a BuyBuyBaby near us, but I didn't see it...it can be ordered online. I've read that the Aton has a premium finish comparable to the Peg Peregos.

I will install the Coccoro this weekend and take pics. It is supposed to be narrow enough to install 3 across so I hope I can install in the middle and still have room for rear passengers.

Hello Mr Snrub. Congrats. It should be later in or have been earlier in this weekend that your 1st child comes/came into this world(that is if you weren't early).

Thanks, Deanhttn! No, though, neither my X1 nor my son have arrived. My wife is due in late April and my car is due into Baltimore today.

Thanks though!

And, no, I haven't bought a car seat yet. I think a lot will be okay, from reading here and other places. I wanted to wait until I could try to fit it in the new car, but I may just pull the trigger. At least, that's what my mother in law wants me to do!
