Thumbs down bad design.

hey gang just picked up my 2012 x1. love the truck but will be returning it very very soon.. reason.. when you open the sunroof at hiway speed you get a terrible drone sound in the cabin.. my wifes ears almost were bleeding, and its twice as bad if you push down on the difuser, so wtf. didnt bmw test for this. i cant keep this vehicle sorry. next. by the way my civic with sunroof open.. is very comfortable to drive. my crv was also excellent, as with our last 323i. this one really sucks,, interior db level is greater than our 128i convertable top down.. i will take measurements tomorrow once i get to the shop and have acess to an audio control sa 3055 meter.. boooo bmw.. small oversite i must say... but none the less very important.

You shouldn't open it fully if travelling at speed. The sunroof should open to a "comfort open" position when you first open it. You then usually have to push the button again to bring it to the fully open position. If you leave it at the comfort open position, I have no problems with it what so ever. I've had three bmw's now, a 320Ci, 135i and X1, all with sunroofs and not noticed the x1 to be any worse at speed than the other two.

much better when partially open, but using it open fully should not be an inconvience at 44000 dollars, mercedes mlk 350 for 39000 works perfect. very little noise. i think i am really being convinced to give my x1 back and go across the street and try the 350.

You would be more believable if you didn't sound like an idiot. First of all its a GLK that Mercedes has. Their other SUVs are ML, G, and GL.

And the GLK is more expensive than the X1... the GLK is more in line in price and size with the X3.

trust me, you can't have the runroof open fully on the GLK when driving (I currently own one). I open it maybe 3/4 so there's no droning.

It basically happens on ALL panoramic sunroofs because the front panel is bigger than a typical sunroof (your CRV). That coupled with the SUV design creates the drone. If you want to have the sunroof fully open. just lower the rear windows a tad and voila proble solved

On normal-sized sunroofs there is a pop-up deflector that raises when the roof is opened. On the E90 this has a tooth/comb shape and these ridges break up the airflow. Does the X1 have that?

Yes there is a deflector.

Nothing unusual about the extra noise when it is opened in part or in full. And sure as hell not noisier than a convertible.

No idea what OP is on about.

there is a very annoying thumping sound centred around 65hz very very annoying, same as on my 323i when i hold down the diffuser.. but all the time on the x1. the diffuser is just a mesh screen which is slowing down the wind but there still is a tremendous vortex created by wind speed, i dont have a wind tunnel but, that is what causes the noise. its the speed of air flowing over the hood and going in the car through the hole. thus a diffuser to slow the speed down or aggitate it enough to not enter the hole.. the screen on the x1 is not doing its job properly. i must talk to r&d on this one..lol... say for this problem.. very nice ride..

iam an idiot because of a typo? you got to be kidding.. glad to finally meet someone who is perfect.. and i due know the direct comparison of the 350 is the x3. not my point.. a 44000 dollar vehicle should be able to give you full access to there features without problems.. now i due like the xplanation of the larger panaramic glass. makes sense.. instead of bashing me, solve my problem. never mind i will due it myself, iam an acoustical engineer.

Why didn't you test drive the car before you buy it?

He'd be more believable if his grammar improved.

Anyway, thumping sound is no different to driving with one front and one back window down. Air noise would cause a roaring not a thumping. This is an issue of air pressure, not a deflector problem.

poked around on realoem. It's funny that the same deflector (54102993887) is used on the Rolls Royce Ghost. I'm not sure if there is a size difference on the deflector vs the one on the E90 (54107157449) .. maybe a retrofit or modification is possible?

Just Tested it ...

Hey guys, I've just tested it "Wide Open" on the Highway with a strech at 140 Km/h and I could still hear the radio and the kids on the back seet. I was able to talk with my 6 years old daughter without any problem.

The wind noise was very acceptable. Don't know why someone would bring this car back to the dealer for that. I could'nt be much impress by the "design" of the roof after that test. No need to say that on a secondary road under the sun and under 100 km/h it's a blast to drive :-)

So, I will keep the car I think. No plan to bring it back to my dealer ...

Have a nice day.

I just read a post in a German forum where a GLK driver, who had a X1 before, stated that the sunroof in the X1 was clearly better. He said that he could drive 20 km/h faster in the X1 with same amount of noise and wind turbulence compared to the GLK.

test drove in the rain so never got to open the sunroof, as far as noise issues, i am just spoiled by my honda civic thats is considerably quieter, as the dealership took it back as i have bought two other bmw from them, but i will be test driving an ml 350 diesel.
other than that.. it was a very nice vehicle.. motor a little noisey on hard throttle, but comfortable, very good on gas, quick, i will also look at the 2010 x3 test drove the 2012 didnt like the interior..

The simple solutions are always the best. I run an E91 touring/wagon with the panoramic roof, and the rear windows being cracked open is the answer for driving at speed. I've had other cars where this has been the solution to air pressure buffeting the interior wth the roof open, so don't see any issue. BTW, I've been using this solution for over 30 years.

agreed. Just crack open the rear windows a little to stop the droning... and stop being ridiculous.
