E84 tail light arrangement

Hi all!

Recently I bought a 2012 X1 E84. Since then I've noticed that some of these cars have all the rear lights on at all times when the headlights are turned on, but with others only the outer lights are on (i.e the ones on the boot are not lit). I see that the ones on the boot are also rear fog lights, but he ones I've seen just seem to be the brightness of the standard rear lights.

The lights on my car are the latter and I was wondering if this is correct for the year and were the all-lights-on a change for the 2013- models?

This is an example of what I've seen with all tail lights on

My rear fogs are significantly brighter than my running lights. Not entirely sure what you're on about t be honest.

When my fogs are off there's no lights on the boot/trunk. Only when I put on rear fogs do those lights work.

I've seen lots of cars where those light do light up, but not as fogs, simply as tail lights

There is a change in the LCI tail lights in July 2012. I suppose the LED tubes were introduced with that change.

Hi

As far as I'm aware (in the UK at least) you'll only see the tail lights like your picture when someone has included the upgraded Xenon headlights in a build.

All us people with bog standard headlights just have the outer part of the rear cluster light up.

I believe its been like this since 2009.

Two types of lights...the LED tail-lights, and the brake lights. All four segments are tail-lights (two LED strips) and the outer two lenses are the combination brake/signal lights. The inner two lenses are the adaptive brake lights / rear fog lights.

If your inner tail-light lenses are not working, you've burned out the LED(s), and require a replacement (as I am for one of my outer lenses).
