2014 X1 surprise

Picked up the 2014 X-line X1 35i on Saturday and got a big surprise. It does not have the auto start-stop button on the dash! You can engage the auto start-stop in ECO PRO mode, but it is not the default setting. This is how it should have been in the first place, as repeated starter engagement in city driving is annoying. We drove a couple of 3 series and the X1 with both engines and I thought all of them had the auto start-stop button on the dash. Even the CA seemed surprised. Was this a running change or am I blurring the 3 series and X1 test drives?

You can engage ASS from the Eco Pro menu? That's a new feature if so. Our 2013 does not have any capability of running ASS, and of course does not have the button below the starter either.

That's according to the CA. I haven't tried to do it yet.

The 6HP transmission in the xDrive35i does not have support for auto start stop. Unless there's an unannounced 6 speed from ZF no one knows about. BTW, anyone every figure out if the 6HP is the 6HP19TU, 6HP19Z, 6HP21 or some other transmission? The manual calls it a 6HP19TU but online parts sites say it's a 6HP21 and 6HP19Z.

Ah yes, that makes sense.
I do notice on the idrive that when selecting ecopro, that the screen shows some ecopro tips, but there's nothing there to look at.

Exactly three completely useless tips, as far as I can tell.
1: If you give gas past a certain point, it recommends avoiding hard acceleration. Even if it was to get up a hill.
2: If you brake to a stop, it recommends coasting in advance before stopping. Even if you coasted for 20 seconds before finally stopping.
3: If you engage neutral while coasting to a stop to save even more gas, or switch to a higher gear for the same reason, it tells you that you should be in D.

Anyhow, ECOPRO isn't really doing much on the 35i. As far as I can tell, it's just reducing the effect of the air conditioner, and displaying a phony counter of how many extra miles you can go because you used ECOPRO. If you have to brake for a red light, it tends to go down to +0.0 mls again, even if you would have to brake for the same light if not using ECOPRO.

35i, no auto start/stop.

I got the 35i to drive and have fun with. Rarely does that and good gas mileage go together.

X1 xDrive35i

Apparently Motor Trend thinks the 35i is top 10 most fun vehicle to drive by combined MPG...I enthusiastically agree. New article posted on their site.

What I want to know is how they have pictures of a red 35i.
Then I want to know how they have pictures of a 35i with 8-speed gearbox.

They mention the 35i, but the picture is the 8sp valencia orange 28i. Glad they recognize how fun our rides are to drive.
