35i Driveline Clunk

13 35i 78k - CPO valid until August

I have a slight *thud* sound in the rear of my car when taking off from a stop at moderate throttle. The car will accelerate to 2-3mph, then the thud hits. It’s not immediate when the throttle is pressed.

Also, if I brake torque the vehicle in Drive at a standstill, the clunk will hit after a few seconds.

I have checked the diff bushings and giubo to the best of my ability and see nothing wrong. The diff seems to be leaking from both rear axle seals, though. It is wet, but not dripping yet.

Is there an easy way to check the center driveshaft bearing without dropping the whole exhaust? It is located right above the two midpipe cats and their heat shield.

Or should I look elsewhere? Thanks!

This is just random, but I also had an audible clunk in my car, turns out it was bad spark plugs and fuel was booming thru the exhuast in misfires. Check the drive shaft, the Xdrive is kinda clunky to begin with, do take offs in 2nd and then first gear to see if you can narrow down transmission clunk (maybe a bad gear) vs drive line clunk.

Interesting! Good info.

I have been able to narrow the clunk down to a specific scenario today, which makes me more confident it's actually the transfer case.

While rolling 5-10mph, if the wheel is turned left (like a u-turn scenario) it will clunk. Straighten the car out, then turn right, and it will clunk. It seems like the driveline is starting to bind when the wheel is turned a lot while moving... i.e. low-speed parking lot maneuvers or pulling away from a stop sign while turning.

I agree with this. Transfer case should be covered under CPO.
