Anyone Go From A 3-series Wagon to an X1?

Would love to hear from you - - how does the cargo space (particularly the "hatch" area) compare between the two - with seats up and down? What about rear leg room - is there more in the 3? How does the ride compare, too?

Thanks

Doug

Cargo space is bigger in 3 series, leg spaces in rear compartiment is better in X1

X1 drives as a bimmer should.

We've had 2 E91s and are looking to upgrade from the current one. Drove the X1 today as it's about the same price as a used 2011 E91 (upper $30's-low $40's). My wife and I walked away really disappointed. It looks cheap and it is cheap. Interior is pretty dated - "vintage mid 2000's" if you don't get the navi - and isn't that well finished. The plastic around the start button is hard and sounds hollow when you pop the key in and out. The cargo area finish is basic compared to the E91, the rear seat is cramped with no amenities (no shades, no vents) and the add on cup holder hanging off the side of the center console is a joke. On the exterior, the new LCI front end is decent, but the rear 3/4 view makes it look like the jacked up wagon that it is. The rear view looks very simple. As we were walking back to the showroom, an E91 passed us in the lot. We both commented how hunkered down and sleek it looked. We walked in fully prepared to order an X1 - and left wanting to focus on finding a CPO E91 (or just wait for the F31...). Sorry to those that are in love with the X1...I'm sure it will find an audience, but it doesn't feel like good value. To me a $45-50k F31 is better value than a $35-40k X1. If you've had and enjoyed an E91, the X1 will underwhelm.

I have not read a single car review in Car and Driver, Motor Trend, Automobile or Autoweek that agree with any comments made by 3xED. Everyone has their opinion but I guarantee that opinion is in the minority in fact every article talks about how nice the interior is and I sat in two today and it is as nice as my E93.

I agree with Lucky13. Every reviews are good. The backseats are more than ok, comfortable and legroom is good unless the driver is a 6'4" guy ...

This is the "entry level SAV" for BMW so you can't expect the finition of a X5.

The upper dash is made of soft touch material, so are the upper portion of the doors. You will have hard plastic in the lower section of the doors, at mid level in the dash board and in the center console.

You will found the X1 a little bit cheap but only compared to other "more" expensive BMW models. If you compare the X1 to the competition outside the brand, it is in the upper range of the list.

I own mine since october 2011 and I'm very enjoying it. Could not understand comments this "harsh" about a vehicle this fun to drive and well finished from my opinion.

As for the reliability, outside a recall for a bolt around the timing chain, nothing to complaint at all.

Yeah, while the E84 is E90 based, the interior feels noticeable higher quality. I have a friend with an E90 and we currently have an E82, the E84 has a nicer interior than either. It's not F30 nice, but a good bridge between the E9x and F30. The rear seat also feels much roomier for my 6'1" self than the E91 interior. The only thing that 3xED really got right is that the X1 is clearly a crossover and not a wagon, it does sit higher than the E9x and F30. As for saying that a 20% more expensive car seems nicer, I'd certainly hope so or BMW would have really screwed up.

The cupholder comment pretty much sums up the relevance of this review. Its so ridiculous coming from an E91 owner of probably the worst cupholders in automotive history. Seriously, did you actually START the car or were you just too appalled by the plastic around the button and threw in the towel right then and there?
