half black tail pipes

S28i, 5 months old, less than 3000 miles. Only the left tail pipe is showing black at the bottom half, see pic. Is this normal? Thanks.

Garage List
06 330i  [7.00]
2002 X5 3.0i  [0.00]
2001 525i  [0.00]
The other one is most likely only open above a certain RPM. Can kind of see the flapper in it in this pic.

100% normal. The other side only opens at WOT, close to, depending on engine load. It's vacuum operated. Look up the golf T mod, you can have 2 black pipes.

As it's been said, pull the vacuum line off the actuator on the side of the muffler. You can fold it and zip-tie it closed, tuck it away.

Does that do anything for performance or sound?

I don't imagine the designers would have introduced a flap unnecessarily...

Your car will be slightly louder on startup and at part throttle. Still very quiet overall though. You won't even really notice it driving around , but you'll notice it on startup.

There are literally eleven thousand videos of it on youtube. Extremely common "mod".

You can find an cable in the trunk on the left side, just lift the plastic "bucket" up and there's the control cable which can be disconnected. Results in the valve open all the time and no error from the car itself

The error is hidden but it's not a big deal.
