Prospective X1 buyer - questions

So lately we have been on the hunt for a smallish SUV to have a car with some extra cargo space, to haul the dog in, if we decide to have kids, a starter "mom" car, etc. but we want it to still be fun to cruise around in. I want to look forward to driving the car, not have it be some soccer mom bore. We have looked at everything and like the Q5, Evoque, X1, and X3 the best. Her favorite was the X1, so here I am

I've got some questions hoping you all can help with as my sales guy was pretty clueless about the car - all I heard was "yep! sure does! yep! you got it!" - "is this an 8spd tranny?" "yep sure is!" "umm, the dash says 6 and won't go into 7" "oh hmmm, maybe it's a 6spd?" Gotta love dealers:

- Does anyone own or have you driven more than 1 of the above cars? Curious to hear your impressions as well.

- Can you get the 8spd tranny in the X1 35i? In some pictures I see the 8spd shifter (like the configurator pic attached), and in others it's the same 6spd one we drove today. The 8spd felt MUCH better in the X3 than the 6spd in the X1. What are the technical differences in the transmissions?

- If we get the X1 we definitely will get the M line, no doubt about it. But I am a big fan of paddle shifters on auto trans. When I configure on the site, it says if I have the M line, and I select paddle shifters, that I need to remove the M package - is this just a configurator error or seriously, can you not get paddle shifters on the M line (seems kind of odd)

- Are there any plans or rumors about a true X1M? None that I could find but you all know better than me.

- Generally speaking, how is BMW these days with aftermarket modifications? The mod bug might bite me on this car, it could be one heck of a little mini-suv-rocket with a few cheap mods given that motor's potential. I understand this varies from dealer to dealer but interested in your experiences.

- No auto trunk open/close option - really?

- Any Individual options or neat things you can order but need an informed dealer to get it done?

- We will likely do Perf Delivery - any perks/benefits outside of whats listed on the site? For example, when you do Euro Delivery with MB they give you a fixed discount off of MSRP.

Anything else you think I should know given all of the above?

2.8 has the 8 speed tranny, the 3.5 has only a six speed. The eight speed is really smooth.

To get the paddle shifters on M Sport when you order the code is ZXA, the dealer will enter this code when they place the order. The web site has an error and won't allow you to do it or show it but I have it coming on my M Sport arriving next weekend.

The option code for paddles with M sport is 7XA, 2XA for non M sport. ZXA isn't an option code.

To reply to your other questions OP:

only a 6 speed with the 35i

No auto trunk, It would be nice as it needs quite a lot of force and may hurt sales to smaller women.

No BMW Individual options are available for cars produced at Leipzig (X1/1er factory)

No discount with Perf Center delivery but it's a very cool experience and I highly recommend it if you live anywhere near SC.

Not all people at the dealers are stupid

You really think the the trunk needs quite a lot of force to close. These must be a fault with the car then as I can close mine with two fingers, not hard at all.......suggest you take it back if its that stiff

The paddle shifter is a part of standard features in M Sport Line package. Once you select M Sport Line package, you automatically get the paddle shifter. You do not have to select "Paddle Shifter" in standalone Options. The "Paddle Shifter" in standalone Option is for people to choose when they order other Lines.

I don't believe you automatically get paddle shifters with M Sport. There are two codes for steering wheel options with M Sport, 710 is M steering wheel or 7XA is with paddle shifters. I don't think they would put this in the order guide for M Sport unless they were giving you an option. I know I had to tell my dealer I wanted the paddle shifters.

I confirmed today paddle shifters don't automatically come with M Sport. Go to autotrader.com and look at the white M Sport at Bowling Green, KY which definitely shows the steering wheel without paddle shifters.

It may say that on the website, but the default order for the M Sport X1 does NOT come with paddle shifters on the build order. You have to make sure your CA will order it that way. The M Sport comes in two steering wheel variants - one with and one without paddle shifters. The naked wheel is the default.

Well BMW needs to get the website right HELL! Looks to me they should not make it a guessing game.

This then is very misleading if what you say is true!

Teleskier is correct about the Paddle Shifters not being the default when ordering an M-Sport. When I recieved my order to approve via email, it did not have paddle-shifters. They had to change my order to include option 7XA.

Agreed.

And from accounts of people who received their X1's already, the US configurator makes the coral red seats look darker and more brown-hued than they really are.

Drove the 35 today, was the first x1 on the lot. X-line with premium, tech, and cold weather. It was awesome, even with just the six speed. There was a bit of body roll in the curves, but I blame that on the lack of sport suspension. I want to drive a 28, but right now the 35 is nothing to sneeze at.

Does anyone know if they'll let you order the 323 18" wheels on the 35i square width with 225 F/R rubber rather than 225/255 staggered? 'Performance' tires means summer or AS performance, is that changeable on the order sheet? Apart from the look I see only negatives running a staggered setup on this car and if anything would just space the rears out to get the look I want.

No they only come staggered. The 321, 421, 322, and 320 are the only wheels (in 18) that come non-staggered.

Went back to try and order a 35 yesterday, my dealer offered me 25k for my 09 335 xdrive coupe in "average" contition with 27550 miles. Edmunds puts my car at 27k trade in, 31k for retail sale, and 29k for private sale. On top of that, they are saying that premium package doesn't include the red leather on Msport, and wanting to charge for it separately! Plus they are standing firm at MSRP plus just under 1k! This is disappointing, but they are the only dealer here in Alaska.

Posting my car on craigslist to see if I can get the extra 4k above what they offered. Maybe they will do better with cash in hand, or I can order from a dealer in the lower 48.

That leather bs doesn't sound right, I'd say patience will be rewarded especially up there if you can wait. That trade in allowance sounds pretty rough too...

This is 100% accurate I'm looking at my build sheet right now 7XA is msport wheel w/ paddles, and default is no paddles

Yeah, sounds like they are trying to hose me for the "wow/new" factor. I actually bought my car from the same salesperson, and was hoping he would be straight with me but now I have my doubts. Push comes to shove I'll wait until someone changes their mind (unlikely, awesome car) or can't pay, then buy CPO.

This is all really helpful guys thanks.

Going to go back to test the 28 vs the 35 and make the call from there. If the 35 had the 8spd tranny it'd be a no brainer. So far it's the X1, Q5, or Evoque. Evoque has the best styling (IMO) but is the least fun to drive and the lack of a functioning sunroof blows me away. Q5 has everything we want but is kind of boring, would like to test the new 2013. The X1 really had everything we wanted.
