Cracked/Teared Driver Seat

I just noticed this today...
My car is only 4 years old and leatherette is supposed to be stronger than leather.
BMW won't do anything because my car is out of warranty.
What do I do?

Find a place that can fix it? This sort of thing can usually be fixed. Try upholstery repair shops

I'm assuming that you conditioned the seats regularly?

I can see some dirt or dark smudges on the exterior side of the seat. There is some vertical peeling which brings the presumption of a puncture / insertion that cut the material. If you look properly, the darker smudge ends up at the vertical tear maybe something was pushed and in the end cut the material in that place pushing it upwards. A vertical piece sticking out shows that it was cut, not cracked.
Leatherette doesn't have elasticity like leather, so regardless that you conditioned the material there is only that much it can stretch to.
I presume that you can order a new OEM seat cover and replace it.

Check your jeans. A rivet might be digging in and causing the scratches

The picture in the link is not a crack. Those are friction scratches resulted from a heavier person that sits in that seat. When a heavier person gets in and out of that vehicle , the seat cushion lowers so much that touches the plastic margin of the seat which scratches the material due to the specific movement. That is a different color anyway (beige), and looks like leather, not leatherette.

I'm the only driver and I'm 175 lbs. So that's what I'm saying it must be a defect from BMW

Wow, given the info provided I say this is a defect as well. The leatherette on my 2002 325i last for 8 years and 65K+ miles and looked NEW when I sold it. Of course, my car was garaged and never exposed to temps below +15F. And I'm over 220 lbs.
The leather on my '13 X1 is still looking new after 48K+ miles and I'd think it would pale in comparison to the durability of leatherette.
This sucks that it didn't hold up better. How many miles on your ride?

We don't know the stature/body shape of that person. Maybe they just kept crushing the side of the seat when they got out

Upholstery cracking

The beige leatherette on my wife's '14 X1 is starting to crack on the driver's seat bottom bolster.

Three years old and fewer than 15,000 miles. My wife is 5'4'' and slim.

No way this should be happening.

I will be taking the car in next week.

I have the same exact issue. Driver seat, on the side as well, just like you!

My car is on extended warranty and my dealer told me he could not pass it under warranty. My dealer has been good with me, so I suppose that's the truth.

Upholstery shop told me this happens a lot with BMW. The procedure is to replace the top piece instead of patch/repair. I got quoted between 150$ and 250$.

Oh that's not too bad. Would they be able to match the color pretty well?

I would think so, the guy who gave me the 150$ does work for multiple dealers (kia, gm, etc.).

I'm sure black leatherette is pretty common after all

This happened to mine as well. Showed it to the dealer and got instant approval for warranty repair. Feeling lucky...
