Snow/ice experience?

How have all of your experiences been in snow? We have only had very small amounts of snow (couple inches) and I feel the X1 did fairly well as far as control and handling (With Bridgestone Blizzak.) What I wonder is.. with deep snow, and the lack of clearance, how do these things handle large amounts of snow? (Min. 1 Foot)

Our e83 X3 .. has plowed through snow up almost to the grilles.. (with aggressive snows fitted) and been okay.

Anyone???

I've been very impressed with the X1 AND T-Rack winter wheel/tire package running General Artic Altimax snows. Good traction and no problem with 8+ inches. Obviously you can't throw it into a sharp turn in snow/slush without it loosing some traction.

My 2015 x28iM + performance snow tires has been great this past week in Chicago with a huge snowstorm. The one annoyance I have is that I have all the parking sensors stuff and ice gets on all the bumpers so the sensors go crazy when you are parking. I park outside and it probably wouldn't be an issue if I had a heated garage where everything just melted off every evening.

i have 19s all season and i been able to drive thru foot of snow. Activating DTC helps also for better traction snow conditions

[QUOTE=X135iM;17342782]How have all of your experiences been in snow? ............................QUOTE]

MY 2013 X1 2.8i has A/S RFTs and there has been absolutely no problem in any snow or foul weather conditions experienced thus far..
In the past we've had a Rav4 and Subaru Forester and the X1 is certainly equal to the Subaru for it's foul weather handling capabilities and better than the Rav4 (IMO).
Traction has been good in any depth of snow.
Ice could be a different issue, but I would avoid taking my car out if there were ice conditions.

So far so good with new Bridgestone Driveguard all seasons. Snow is one thing but with packed or black ice it doesn't matter what tire you have. You will slide

elfhearse did the Altimax affect the handling at all?? I put a set on our e83 X3 and the handling went a little sloppy, however the winter traction was AMAZING. I opted for the Bstone Blizzak's for the x1 in fear of handling issues with Altimax. The snow traction is very good, but I feel the Altimax had the snow advantage. Thoughts?

With smaller snow tires, it handles like a champ on snow. Throwing it in controlled 4-wheel slides around a curve is just too much fun.

However, there are some pitfalls:
- The rear of the wheel wells collect more sludge than any other car I have had. Be sure to clean them out after driving when parking outdoors, cause if it freezes, you'll have a hard time getting it out due to the small space.
- It sprung a coolant leak. Not cool.
- The doors sometimes go into a rapid lock/unlock/lock/unlock cycle when there's snow on the handles.

I have 17" performance snow tires on my X1, and it eats through the snow here no problem.

Even during "snow storms" and the car is buried in the parking lot, I have no issues.. just brush off the snow from the roof and windshield, off I go. No shovelling required.

It's also a hoot to whip around in the snow with traction control off.

Sigh, I wish I could report on our X1 in the snow here in Salt Lake City. I bought new tires (Michelin Ice-X) was all set to mount them in early Dec. Then it stopped snowing. I ate lunch outside in the sun yesterday. At this point I am not sure I am going to mount them and just continue to wear out the !@#$ run flats.

Grovsnus - will you please elaborate on "it sprung a coolant leak?

Ours is great, running on studded Nokian Hakkapeliitta 7s. Traction control off, of course.

Once I get it back from service, I will. I think there's a small crack in the radiator, but it could be a hose or valve. My guess is that they put the same coolant in models they sell to the North as to the South, and it doesn't handle -30 degree temperatures without freezing and expanding. I could be wrong.
In any case, it should not happen in a car that's less than 2 years old and hasn't gone 15k miles yet.

If wrong coolant is the case, I'd say every Canadian would then have coolant issues. Wasn't there a problem with E9x reservoirs cracking?

sDrive here with WS80 on 17". ESC off for boatloads of drifting fun. Two wheels + snow tires is plenty except for really icy hills with 15+ degree gradients and those are not fun. Snow is no problem though.

X135iM The cornering on the General Artics is worse, higher/softer sidewalls create nasty understeer but they are fantastic in snow so its a trade-off. I usually pull them off and put the stock wheels/tires back on if there isn't any snow in the near term WX forecast.

I was pretty impressed with my xDrive 28i today, we don't get a lot of snow in east NC so the roadworks were pretty crumby (3"+- accummulation and plenty of terrible drivers), but I felt planted and in control the entire 30 mi commute from work home. I have the Sportline standard 18" wheels with Pirelli P7 A/S tires.

Drove 94 miles in falling down Feb 21st Snowstorm from South Jerz all the way to NYC 1:44pm with Conti DWS. Also, went to Long Island (Fresh Meadows & Back to Manhattan) in the evening early night in all type of Snow Slush Ice mix. Not 1 hiccup.
