I believe all the US models come with Roof Rails... To remove them you will need to drop the headliner to access the assembly hardware and you will need a new trim piece to go on the roof where the rails currently sit which would be from a country that had a no roof rail option. Not to sure how hard it is to source for the X1 but we did this on a 535xi wagon e61.

I could have sworn someone, maybe paradoxical3 or CIWS, had run theirs at the track already.

Dude don't take it off, as you can see it is alot of hassle doing that alone which could compromise the rigidity of the vehicle as well as your safety.

Hehe, seriously? He's talking about the roof rails. As noted, you can get at the mounting hardware by dropping the headliner and then it's just a matter of getting the blanking plates and getting them painted and installed. Here's the diagram, but tracking down the blank plates will probably require using an EU parts supplier:

It really depends who is removing it for you which in sense could make you or break you.
Just remember the X1 is new in the US so majority of the shops is not familiar with the car unless you pay your dealer for the labor.

Unlikely to compromise the rigidity though. The X1 is available without the roof rails outside of NA.

I have seen a post on this before and from what I understand it's a rather involved process and there are issues with water leaking afterwards

Uh, EVERY X1 comes with the holes for roof rails either way. the rail trim is replaced and the holes are filled with correct bolts with rubber grommets built on them.

I have all the parts if you want to buy them. I bought a different toy car to work on and dont have time for this conversion. Parts cost me $250.00

You can find what parts from realoem and then order from ECS or someone.

Then you can download the ETKA or whatever guide to show how to remove and install.
