Headlight alignment after accident
As reported here earlier, I celebrated putting 1K miles on my X1 by smacking a deer with it; the driver's side xenon light was among the casualties.
Got the car back today, and I'm trying to judge if the replaced light is correctly aimed. The xenon light have a sharp horizontal cutoff, with a kick-up to the right. Should the horizontal line of both lights be the same, or should the left one be a bit lower to favor oncoming traffic? Thnx in advance, Moon |

A bit lower is normal, also it may point a bit to the passenger side.

That may be consistent with what I'm seeing. It is really tough to judge right now with the amount of snow and assorted crud on the streets, tho' it looks pretty good on my garage wall when I pull in.
One of the things I always liked about the E-codes on the Jeep was the ease of aligning the two lights; simply keep the cutoffs level. Any way to adjust the lights on the Bimmer? Moon |

squish, I'd forgotten about that conversation. Are you still going to post pics of the adjustment area?
Were you saying an allen key is what is required to make the adjustment? Presume you were talking about the xenon lights. Thnx, Moon |

Moon,
Sorry, I keep forgetting to take pics. It's been freezing out, and I've been lazy. Will get pics as soon as I can. And, you need a five-headed driver; no idea what those are called. But, a flat-head will work just fine, as that's what I used. |

squish, had a quick look under the hood and couldn't find what you were describing; likely will need the pics.
Understand about the weather; just no damned fun being outside. Thnx, Moon |

Okay, question answered.
Immediately outboard of the bumpers that support the hood, on the black shell that supports the radiator, there is a hole. In the bottom of the hole is a white, nylon screw that will accept a 6mm Allen key, a Phillips screwdriver or a straight blade. Shining a light down the hole will let you see this clearly, especially since it is white. Counterclockwise does indeed raise the lights; I raised the right one just a bit and the left one a fair amount, until the horizontal cutoffs of the lights correspond while shining on the garage wall cinderblocks. It has made a huge difference in visibility, and thus far I haven't been blinked by oncoming traffic. As the car apparently adjusts for load, I'm not terribly concerned that a full load will be problem. Squish, thnx for the initial bird-dog on this, and I'm really happy to have been able to adjust the lights...I wasn't getting my money's worth out of the Xenon lights 'till now. Wish I'd paid a bit more attention to how the lights were hitting before the accident, but I'd be surprised if they weren't supposed to have the same cutoff. That is how I've always aligned E-code lights. Be patient in your adjustments; you'll like the results. Moon |

Thanks for the tip, I'll probably raise mine slightly as the upper cut-off is very low.
