Battery (near) fire

So,

battery on my X1 was 4 years old and i decided to change it (no issues with it, just my personal preference to change batteries every 4 years or so).

Did not get it recoded by BMW.

Battery OEM part and fitted, worked with no issues for 8 weeks.

Yesterday on a long(ish) run, i noticed what looked like a jet of steam coming out from under the car (full of flu so no smell).

Popped it into the locat garage to find the battery at melting point, 'steam' was battery external vent point, mechanic would not go near it for at least half an hour until the thing had cooled a bit (still very hot with battery plastic feeling soft after 2 hours)

Alternator checked and putting out 14V but no higher.

Only thing we found was that the secont battery vent plug was still in place, would this have cased this problem?

Charging rates change based on the battery, it was feeding much more current to the battery then required by the new one.
You fried your new battery.

It varies the charging rate according to the age of the battery to keep it optimally charged. If you get a new AGM battery and don't register it, the car may over-charge the new battery.

Spoke to BMW today (need to get it booked in for battery registration) and they said that not registering the battery would not cause this, the battery had been in for over 2 months with some long drives with no issues

Could it be just a defective battery? One of the cells could have shorted and caused this?

Then wouldn't the battery just show low voltage?
I assume they threw a dmm on the battery right?

I'm sure a lot of owners diy a battery replacement and don't register it. It's got to be a defective battery.

I heard stories about this, but it was always friend of a friend sort of deals.

Is the new battery AGM (the same as the original)? If not that is expected outcome.

Anyone bought from BMW directly? And how much was it? I heard in the realm of 300-500. Costco's Exide AGM for our X1 is almost $200.

New battery OEM (same as BMW fitted) AGM with same part number as original. even whilst boiling itself to death battery was still putting out 12 volts.
Battery cost £180
Booked in for next BMW slot for coding (however they say it may take up to 3 hours) so not sure what they get up to :-)

My money at the moment is that both vent ports need to be open (hoping it is that as the cheapest to fix :-)

Yeah I know someone who did and more than a year later still driving on the same battery (E60 with N54 engine). In fact I think he got it from Costco too.

Maybe so, but I would not mess with the potential energy stored in the battery.

I would also not trust that battery that come so close to self destruction.
But that is just me😉

Can someone explain what it means to "register" the new battery. Will changing the battery wipe out any custom coding that was done?

You pay BMW money to get rid of the idiot light on dash.
What it actually does is heavily speculated, some say it tailors the charging based on the battery type, others call BS and say it's a money grab.

The official explanation is that it tells the computer that there is a new battery (and type of battery that it is) so that the computer can tailor the charging cycles accordingly.

Whether true or not I don't know, but Carly for BMW (Android or iPhone application) can do the registration in your garage - all you need is the appropriate dongle and the app (about $100 for both).

When my friend was changing his battery on the E60 his research told him that the battery will last a year or two less without registration, but that's based on anecdotal evidence on forums. FWIW he didn't opt for the registration and figures if the battery will die in five years he'll just get a replacement via the warranty.
