28 and 35 have no exterior differences, right?
I was just thinking about debadging and the X1 and in past years, for say a 3 series, you could tell a 4 cylinder 28i from a 6 cylinder 35i by at least the exhaust if not other visual parts if both were debadged. As far as I can see, there's no way to tell a 28i X1 from a 35i X1 if both were debadged, am I wrong in this thought?

You can get the black exhaust tips on the 28i with Sport Line.
When I see debadged BMWs I can usually tell it is the cheapest 3 or 5 series available. However, I did see a debadged M5 the other day. On the X1, the X1 is the only real visible badge while driving. You have to get up pretty close to see the 28i or 35i badge...and who really cares anyway? |

The visual differences like the brakes are not glaring but those with working ears will know
9 times out of 10 a debadged car is the lower end model in this country so when i see one that is the impression it leaves with me |

Where I live, it's a sign that someone has parked at a mall where the mall kids steal badges. Of course, there's probably a correlation between owning lower end models and shopping at malls too.

I wish there were more individual styling cues associated with each engine. Not enough of a visual difference IMHO.
They could have made the exhaust tips slightly larger as they have done in the past.

The old 4 cylinder was a single pipe and the 6 was dual pipes which I think was a nice subtle difference. The different brakes I think could be such a small difference that average X1 owner wouldn't even notice the difference? I'd expect knowing the wheel types would be a bigger queue than brake sizes but I think there's some overlap of styles between the 28 and 35?
I'm getting the no-line 35 and that's the only setup where you can get the 323 style wheels that I really like, however it has staggered rear and that's enough to keep me with the standard wheels -- too bad they don't give you the option to have the 323 wheels in a non-staggered setup. |

I have always debadged my BMWs. And they have always been the higher end models. I debadged my 2004 545i sport...and even had people ask me if it was a 528i...but before they could get the question out...they realized what it was. But I debadge them because I think they look cleaner. I just debadged my 35i X1 M which I ordered loaded (minus sat radio). I don't care what people think I'm driving...it all depends on the car and how the badges look on them.

I dislike the door badges and will likely be removing them when I do an OptiCoat detail soon. I don't care if people I'm stopped next to can deduce my engine.

Now for verification: Since our X1 has just been ordered, are the X1 on the trunk lid and the side badges just affixed with adhesive and can be easily removed?

Never debadged before but am considering removing the ///M badges when mine arrives. Just use 3M adhesive remover (or the like) and some fishing line (or similar)?

If done soon after delivery, all that is needed is a hair dryer to soften the adhesive and some dental floss. Don't use solvents since some may dull your finish. Immediately after debadging, I usually wax the area where the badge was removed.

Debadge all my vehicles as well... Even my 35i MSport...
I disagree that most who debadge are "wannabes" or posers...I think it is those who want a clean look Also the 35i has the HID lights as standard...that is a dead give away if you did not opt for the lighting package, most of the base and regular X1's I've seen on the lot did not have the lighting package... |

I am a fan of "sleepers" my self. Had I opted for the 35 I would have debadged it immediatly. sneak up on some unsupecting sports cars.
My BMW scoot is my current sleeper, 0-60 under 6 and passing HD's (stock) on acceleration and willingness to go over 120. he he Back to the debadging, also falls into the old school door shaving as well. the clean lines and nothing sticking out. If I had the funds I could see shaving the door handles and dechrome any bits. and powder coat the rims. As my scoot is my current toy and the X1 is relagated to my winter commuter, I will not perform any changes, just gas and car washes. I will however enjoy the changes I see others do on this website. I look forward to seeing some cool pics. |

Dealers order cars that they think will appeal to the masses and most people would not spend $900 for "headlights". When the X1 was first released in the US, if you wanted xenons, you had to order it with at least ZPP where at least now, ZLP is a stand alone option package.
