X1 Gas Mileage

Just got my X1 AWD a week ago and noticed the gas mileage was WAY below EPA #'s at 15.5 mpg. While I never expected to get EPA numbers I figured it would be a lot closer than that. Dealer tells me that mileage and power are not as good during break in. I think I read that somewhere else. Anyone else told that?

I'm at 1200 miles now and mileage is a little better. Power is much better.

Yes, mileage will go up. Not only because the car gets broken in, but because the driver gets broken in too. While a car is new (to you), it's tempting to step on it every now and then, without thought of how much that affects your mileage. (Drive aggressively for a mile at 10 mpg and another mile frugally at 50 mpg, and your average isn't 30 - it's 16 mpg.)

Sure, you can have fun with the car too, but be sure you don't measure the mileage in a way that includes the fun time.

thanks, guys. I'm liking the car better than I thought I would, but I wish they had put side bolsters in for the driver seat. I also have an SL550 and they really help on the curves

You should have purchased Sport or M Sport package for the seat bolsters.

Yes, the sports seats are highly recommended, both because of the side bolsters and the seat extender.

As for mileage, it's hard to say for sure. I was at 22.9, but am now at 21.5 overall, mostly due to having passed the 2k break-in, I have done more aggressive driving to test it out.

If just counting the daily 14 mile, 9-lights commute, the last half tank calculated at around 23, which I don't find bad at all. Around 30% "manual", 70% D with occasional manual overrides, mainly for engine braking. 91 octane Sunoco. No ECO PRO, and DTC off unless it rains.

Fuel mileage continues to be the biggest disappointment with my 28i. After 12k miles I'm averaging 25 to 26 mpg overall with most miles accumulated on the highway. I managed 29 mpg on one pure highway run in ideal conditions, but I rarely do much better than 27. I know others have fared better and will disagree, but I'm convinced my particular car is not capable of 33 mpg under any conditions.

Nearly all of the German cars I've owned have taken a long time to fully break in, our 135i didn't stabilize in mileage until about 8k miles and our X1 35i still seems to be improving at 7k miles. Previous Audi took as long as 12k miles too.

Yep, fuel mileage sucks. We went for the xdrive28i for financial reasons and I now regret it. Should have just gone with the 35i.

The 28i still gets better mileage overall than the 35i.

But I question BMW NA's decision not to sell the more frugal models here. I'm sure there are plenty of people for which the 18i, 20i or one of the diesels would have been a better choice. It wouldn't surprise me if most X1 buyers never do driving where the difference between a 28i and a 20d would matter, and the sDrive 20d ED gets 45 mpg city, 57 mpg highway, 52 mpg combined.

Those are UK numbers, right? The gallons aren't equal and their driving test cycles aren't the same. I'd figure the 20d, which is the same as what we're getting in the 328d would get slightly worse mileage than the much lighter 3er, so figure something around 25/42 on the EPA cycle. Still impressive, but not really as far out there as the UK numbers might allow you to believe.

The 328d EPA numbers haven't been released yet, but the goal appears to be 28/45. Further, I don't think we'll see any diesels offered in the E84 before it's replaced with the F series model.

No, converted from 4.5 l/100km, which is equal to roughly 52 mpg (US) and 63 mpg (Imperial).

That's the sDrive 20d EfficientDrive version, though, and I doubt you could get the EfficientDrive to run with the crap grade diesel fuels sold over here.

The standard sDrive 20d is less frugal at 4.9 l/100km combined, or 48 mpg (US).
And the xDrive 20d is still worse at 5.5 l/100km combined, or 43 mpg (US)

I actually feel the MPG in these is pretty darn good. I see VW Tiguan drivers getting 20 MPG on average, same as my 35i but I have more weight and 100 more hp on tap.

2.8K miles on the s28i and we are averaging 27.3 mpg. The high altitude (7000 ft) helps with mileage though.

I have had my 2014 X1 for about a week and a half now. Yesterday i took it for a long drive. Not a road trip by any means, but a nice 386 mile round trip. Road conditions were good, no rain or heavy winds and relatively flat. I set the trip computer at the start and at the end, it registered 32.3mpg. Gas tank took 11.8 gallons with a couple extra clicks. 386 / 11.8 = 32.7. I am pleased with the result. Yes, i had to be conservative to get it..but those numbers were not achieved by the EPA while having fun, however, it is possible get the result. Your results may vary!

I was also expecting 25-26 in mixed use driving. I have 1500 miles on my 28xi sport and over the last 400 miles with 75/25 highway/city driving (and without stepping on it too hard), I have only averaged 23.7. I am going to up to 500 as the average is still moving up a little. I will then try 500 miles using the Ecopro function and see what I get. After that, I'll stomp on the gas and see what happens when a BMW is driven as a BMW should.

Most magazines I've read have reported aboput 23mpg average. These "my fuel economy sucks" posts are getting old. Fast.

I used to drive an X6 50i. Even with my foot in the 35i I'm still getting "good" gas mileage.
