TPMS and Tire Replacement
First car with TPMS so please help me out here. For the TPMS on our cars (I guess there are a few systems out there), what do I need to do when I replace a tire or all four? I'm going with non-run flats a.k.a. just 'tires'. TPMS seems to working fine. The tires are just worn.
Thanks! Bonus: E-bay has $50 off new tire/wheel purchases of +$300 w/ code "CTIRES416". I haven't checked if that works with the $70 rebate some manufacturers are offering, but $120 off a set would be really nice. |

So if you're in the US and your car is made after 2007 then your TPMS will use sensors inside the tire (likely attached to the valve stem - if your stem is metal and not rubber then that's probably what it is). When you're replacing the tires you just need to make sure the shop doesn't damage the sensors. If you're getting a whole new wheel and tire set then you need to make sure it has the compatible sensors installed.
Then after installing the new tires or the new set you need to set then to the right pressure and reset the TPMS system so it can learn the new pressures and sensors. Check your manual for how to do this. BTW if you're in Canada then the system uses ABS sensors to measure rotational differences and uses that to identify a flat, so no TPMS sensors involved. |

Thanks! I'm just replacing the tires.
I think I read on this forum that US cars can be coded to run off the ABS sensors. Not sure why BMW just didn't go with that on US cars. They save a few bucks on wheel mounted sensors and we don't have to worry about the gorilla in the shop damaging said sensors. |

That would be because it's illegal in the US. TPMS is required by law on all cars since 2007. I've heard somewhere that Audi has an exemption to use ABS based system because theirs is that good but that might have overzealous boasting by a fan.
To be honest having had a car with TPMS and ABS based systems I actually prefer the TPMS. Something about being able to see the exact pressure and not having to rely on rotational differences that gives me that extra piece of mind. I've already had a few cases where the ABS system failed to detect a 20psi loss because the tire was a run flat. |

Hmmm, didn't know about the TPMS law. I'm not excited about replacing tires at 25,000 miles, but I'm glad to get rid of run flats. I know 25k miles is about average for OEM tires, but that doesn't mean I have to be happy about it. Average on my bike tire is 5k and I'm not happy about it either.
Thanks again! |

I recoded mine to the ABS system last year, no complaints so far. It has picked up on differences of just 6-7 PSI. But that's on non-run-flats. So maybe it's harder to tell with run-flats because they don't deform as much when low.

Good to know. I see why monitoring the pressure via ABS wouldn't work well with run-flats. I'm going with regular tires, so I'll just keep the TMPS as is and if I screw up the sensor, I'll just buy the app and BT adapter to recode instead of a sensor.
BTW, is there a central jacking point to get two wheels on the same side up in the air at the same time with a floor jack? The diff and front subframe worked well on my old car for that. |

If you mean front and rear, yes, you can jack off the rear brace by the diff to raise the rear, or the central front mount point to raise both fronts.

Not sure about displaying an actual reading. iDrive will show which tire is low, but it's a binary (good/not good) indication, not a measured pressure value.

If a person decides to replace RF tires with regular tires and recodes the ABS for tire pressure monitoring, can the TPMS be coded off or does one just have to live with the warning light on all the time.
