XHP for those of us with the 6AT transmission

Thread update: As of 2018, XHP works for E84 X1 35i!

Hey guys,

Did any of you get it to work? I am getting a TCU not compatible error message. I thought all ZF 6AT transmissions from BMW are the same...

Update from xhp

Hi Henry,

the later X1 used a TCU generation similar to that in the 8HP units. We only support the earlier X1 35i versions at the moment, sorry.

Regards

Very interesting find. They indicated to me that it was available. There tune needs some refinement anyways so better to wait.

I ran the full TCU testing for Clemens(XHP guy) back in June. He reviewed the trans file and then activated the XHP for X1 35i use. He said it would work with no issues. Was expecting it to be comped for all the time I spent helping him out, but he didn't come through. I have a newer Alpina version and it works very well, figured I'd let the bugs get worked out on the XHP for a while before I make the purchase.

There is tons of info on the E90 forum.

I have the Alpina and it was the greatest thing I bought for my car.

I have had stock, Alpina, and XHP stage 3 on my 335i. Stock was smooth and very well setup but was a bit sluggish, Alpina was a great improvement in shift speed when using M mode but was completely worthless in D mode, shift logic is not as good as stock. XHP made D mode driveable again but was far from ideal. With different throttle inputs the shift behavior isn't as dialed in as stock. Although the shift speed and firmness in M mode were improved it feels clunky and inconsistent.

Ideal setup for me would be a stock D mode, stage 2 or 3 S mode, and a modified version of the current stage 3 M mode.

If you took the car in with a transmission flash that was not what it had from the factory I would not expect them to cover any repairs. Now if you're asking if it can be detected if removed I am not sure. You can always go ask xHP.

Judging by your username, you've got a 2014, same as me. Dang, I was just getting serious about buying the xHP flash. Guess I'll wait for bugs like mentioned above.

Just as info here...
I was able to use XHP trans flash a few days ago.
The backup went well and then the flash of Stage 3 loaded with no issues.

I have a 2014 X1 35i w/ the ZF 6speed.

Seems to perform very well and all drive modes have differences from the Alpina flash that I have used for a few years.

Do they have the tune broken up into large turbo and stock turbo for the X1? If so, which one are you running?

I have the large turbo flash on the 335i and you can tell them mean big single. 3rd and 4th gear hang on until 2,700 rpm under light throttle.

Their FAQ says JB4 needs to be completely removed. Map0 doesn't cut it.

I removed the can bus wires on the JB4 when I flashed my 335i and that worked.

I have two vehicles. My 335i is flashed and my X1 is stock. Even though the stock transmission tune is a little sluggish I wont update the tune on it until the stock turbo is running more than 15 psi or a larger turbo is installed. The drivability on the stock tune is just better than any current flash options.

***EDIT***

I just checked and it says my car's TCU is not supported.

I see. I got a bit confused there haha. I should really be quoting mwtrogus...

How did you get around the TCU not compatible error message on XHP?

The XHP trans flash has been great, the latest v1.4 stage 3 that I loaded today made some changes for the better. The manual downshifts are crazy from 3 to 2 with high Rev match blips.
I have also unlocked my DME and am running MHD, JB4 flash and the burbles are pretty crazy! I'm pretty much straight piped with no cats so it's pretty loud.

Get a good cable, make sure JB4 is in map 0 and connect it to see if supported. Then make sure you have a battery charger on for the backup and flash. It's so much better than Alpina

I worked with the developer today and was able to flash my 2014 X1 35i.

Initial impressions are really good, but I want to give it a couple of days before a review. Very helpful developer and extremely supportive of his work.

Did you have the Alpina flash before or simply stock?

I tried a couple of the Alpina flashes before XHP.
XHP is much better all around and allows full customization if you want to. The shift points, smoothness and logic is great in D, DS and M
