Rear Fog Mod

Hey guys... a bit of a twist on the rear fog mod that others have performed. I wanted to have the rear fog icon on the button but did not want to pay $150+ for a brand new switch. I found a used switch for a E82 120i (PN 61316932798) from Europe that had the button with logo and swapped it for the blank spacer on my switch.

Good news is that it works and it only cost me $35.

Bad news is that the LED that illuminates the button at night is missing from my switch.

I thought I would share my experience in case anyone else had a similar idea...

You are not totally out of luck. I did the same at first but also used the electronics from the used switch as well. I posted that mod here:

http://e84.xbimmers.com/forums/showp...1&postcount=57

In my case the switch I got was for non-zenon lights but everything else was a match (fog lights and rain sensor). So I just used the electronics board. The leveling control is ignored and now you have the backlighting.

If you swap boards check the soft button height on the boards as they may be different between switches. If so you will need to swap the "block" between the button and board. One can also very easily disassemble the leveling control and put the blank plate from the original over it.

I.e. do not be afraid to totally disassemble the switch and mix and match.

That all worked great but I also happened to find a second switch that was the correct match sans the chrome knob. I just swapped it.

Oh, I paid less than $15 for each switch including shipping .

you can use your OEM switch.... just remove it and then take the tabs of the inactive switch to allow it to activate. no you wont have a lighted icon on the switch when done, but it works for free

I think you missed the point. We know about the free trim the tabs mod. However, some want the button with the spiffy graphics rather than a blank button. Rather than buying an all new switch one can buy a used switch for cheap that has the button with graphics. However, the if one uses the original switch electronics there is no back lighting. As such, one also needs to use the electronics from the used switch. So this more about spending $150 vs $30 or so to get the full function.

Hmmm... I didn't consider that the PCB in the used switch would be compatible. Thank you for the suggestion. I will look in to swapping those if my OCD sets in...

Just did this today. I bought an OEM switch from Germany and used the board and rear button. I used my original switch for the dial because it has the silver finish to it.

Super easy to get at, I used a spoon handle to gently pry the side panel away, then I just pressed the upper tabs and pulled the assembly into the dash and outward through the side panel.

The switch itself is easy to dissamble, but the button removal can be annoying. Just takes a bit of patience and a steady hand with a small screw driver to move the tabs.

Twix it is much easier to remove the dial and swap it than remove the damn button. Just remove the graphics for the dial then pop the dial off. Swap - done.

Great pic of the side panel removed showing the attachment locations. Will be a big help when I swap out the E84's USA light switch with the Euro one I picked up from a Munich BMW dealer when we did ED for the E90.

FWIW I was going to remove the side panel but the vent popped right out really easily. From there one can access the switch from the top.

Thanks guys! Just accomplished this today and it had to be the easiest thing in the world to do, way easier than replacing the switch on the E92 & E90.

Should have made a new post, this one was for rear fogs, not fronts.
