What transmission mode do you use most?
I'm curious what everyone's preferences are? Do you tend to simply put it in "Drive" and go on your way, or take an extra fraction of a second and flip it into "Sport" mode, or does your deep-seated desire for a manual transmission overcome you and you change gears manually either with the shifter or paddles?
I'm assuming that those who ordered their cars with paddles are more likely to put them To use regularly; what about the rest? I bought my car used, sadly without paddles. I find I seldom use the regulars mode, opting to shift manually much of the time, or at least use the sport mode, but I'm curious about others experiences? |

I typically drive in D, occasionally sport, rarely "manual". What I would love to know though is if there is a way to go from manul back to sport, without having to go to drive first. On the rare occasions I drive in manual, I typically choose to go back to sport and it is a nuisance to have to go to drive first.

D for Daytime
and N for Nightime (but it won't move at night--go figure)

Manual mode 90%. 10% eco-pro on the highway. I use regular ass D very little. #manualdenial

DS all the time ... never manual; don't find the paddles or manual shift much fun at all (maybe because the twin turbo diesel has so much torque).

Who can shift the 8 spd fast enough. I use paddles to go up and down mountains, and in drive and my foot for all other driving including track day.
I don't get the manual shift fun. Load on the engine with gas signals when the trans will shift. If I want to go as fast as possible with my foot to floor, I don't think manual shifting will go faster. I like manual transmission shifting, but I just don't think I'm more clever than the car computer on these really good auto trans. |

Im all over the place. I have alpina tune on the trans so mostly d, sport when trying to constantly accelerate and decelerate in traffic, manual when wanted sporadically or when I want those hard quick shifts.

In addition to D, DS and M, there's also "D with paddles", where you keep it in D mode but shift up or down temporarily using the paddles. If I want to drive more sporty, I use manual mode exclusively, but most of the time "D with paddles" works just fine. |

I use M 99% of the time, with the Alpina transmission flash.
I like being in the right gear to blow away Corvettes that try to beat me to the merge ;P I tried out normal S auto mode on the track just out of curiosity (for example, Porsche's PDK has excellent shift logic), and it is not very good. M is the only way to go. |

Heavy city traffic I'll usually stay in D. DS once I hit the highways. Rarely M, but I will drop down a couple gears in D with the paddles to get moving when in traffic.

Mostly use the paddles unless heavy traffic. The stock mapping is very lazy IMHO and the DS programming I don't find all that great. For comparison we also have a 335d and its programming is smoother (much different torque profile of course), but I also use the paddles in that one as well :P
If there was a 3rd pedal option for the X we would have gone that route... - b |

I hate DS, I cannot see myself using it unless I am going to floor it all the way. For normal driving DS holds gears to long for no reason.
I use M a lot, gas milage is way better than D, I think this is mainly because in D it gears down and engine breaks when you coast to a red light. |

I learned on a stick so M comes very naturally. I'd rather drive the car than have the car drive me. it;s more fun -- And i don't have the paddles. Besides that, i down shift to slow the car--especially on a decline. I also use it in stop and go traffic when i need to change lanes quickly (try that in D: first you'll hesitate... you'll see the car in the next lane bare down on you in your mirror. You'll mash the pedal. When the computer finally figures out what you want, it'll upshift 3 gears and launch you into space... not fun).
Up hills, around curves, cruising country roads between 3 and 5 RPMs is a blast--and its what these engines were made for. If you practice M religiously, you will know when to shift and what gear you're in just by the rev of the engine. That's when you'll never look back.
