2015 X1 35i Black Sapphire

Hey there,

I just finalized a deal last night for a 2015 X1 35i. I should be getting it sometime next week and I can't wait! I've been lurking the forums for the last month or two while I made my decision so a big thank you to everyone for all the information that has been shared. I will be sure to post some pics once I get it.

I have my first newb question. I have a set of Blizzak WS70 winter tires that only saw one winter on my old GTI that I would love to be able to use on my X1 in the winter. I'm not sure if they will be big enough/offset ok though. They are 205/55/16, any chance I can use them?

Specs of my baby

2015 35i
475 - Black Sapphire Metallic
ZVR - Technology Package
ZVU - Premium package
459 - Electric seats
481 - Sport seats
522 - Bi-xenon headlights

I don't think you'll find 16" wheels for the X1, though I could be wrong. The smallest OEM size is 17". And on top of that, those tires are 1" smaller in diameter than stock. I would get a fresh set of 225/50/17 snows and put them on some cheap wheels for winter. (Which is exactly what I plan to do.)

Indeed, way too small tires. And 16" won't fit because of the big brakes.

Finally got a few pics. Just from my phone so not the greatest. Got one of the back with the two car seats for any other parents thinking about getting the X1.

I'd recommend putting something between those car seats and that leather if you can to keep it in good condition....

Looks great!

+1 on covering the seats to protect them.

consider yourself very fortunate; the 35i is a rare bird; and one of the last of an era of truly great BMWs (pre "New" BMW). welcome to the club. get some Weisslicht orange LED turn signals and white LED reverse lights, window tint and you are good. enjoy.

Thanks for the comments. I only wanted the car with the 35i. I sent an email to every dealer in Ontario and this was the perfect one for my needs. Not crazy loaded with options but all the ones that were important to me. Besides msport, but I couldn't find any with that.

Eh, you've got the sport seats. Just lower it eventually and you'll have everything worthwhile about the M Sport package.

I avoided msport because of too stiff ride quality especially with awful roads in Northeast. if you have to lower, I heard good things about HR springs elsewhere in the forum.
no rush, just enjoy the ride, acceleration and handling.

That's precisely when you need stiffer suspension. If you glide on flat, well maintained roads, you can get away with softer suspension for comfort. But bumpy twisty roads call for harder springs.

Detroit is flat, Bavaria isn't, which is precisely why BMWs tend to have much stiffer suspension than Americans are used to.

Actually a softer suspension will give more grip on bumpy roads.

True, if you compensate softer shocks with harder springs, or drive slowly. Else wheels hitting bumps will get airborne, and that doesn't give a lot of grip.
And for uncambered turns and cresting hilltops, you really don't want too soft a suspension. Both not too uncommon occurrences up here in the northeast.

But all in all, it's not a bad car for challenging roads. It's no Evo, Impreza or Skoda WRC car, but it is probably one of the better BMWs for tough roads since the E36.
The new X1 is a big step in the wrong direction, I feel. With a FWD base, drive-by-wire and no i6 engine, where's the fun going to be?

I agree with Grovsnus. I bought a 2015 X1 xDrive35i M Sport a few weeks ago and just joined the forum. The car is fantastic and I think the ride on rough roads is incredible. I can't imagine the ride being any smoother! My other rides are a Porsche 911 C4 and Boxster S, both with Bilstein PSS9 suspension. Those cars are sharper in the handling department, but the ride on rough roads is punishing. I guess it's just what you are used to! The X1 M Sport is one smooth and subtle ride to me!

I agree with you that it is a nice car for bad roads, and that the ride is smooth. Also agree that the new X1 sucks.

However, for uncambered roads and cresting hilltops, again you want a softer suspension for maximum grip. Especially if you drive quickly. Of course you don't want it "too soft", but that threshold is still above what the stock X1s spring rates are.

I disagree or let me clarify my original statement. I have drivn both no line and Msport and the Msport model absorbing harsh impacts and potholes was not good to me. it was uncomfortable to me and other occupants when going over bad road impacts. The 19in wheels/tires were probably a factor as well. The standard suspension is plenty stiff. See Car and Driver article on 35i Sport line. That said, the Msport model is the "go to" for spirited driving on twisty roads and flatter corning if that's your thing. end of the day, its a personal decision.

oh and the new X1 is awful and a kick in the face to current X1 owners - who actually enjoy performance.

Absolutely. For everyday spirited driving, I keep 17"s on it, and leave the staggered 19"s for touring duties. The 19" wheels with high-speed summer tires are awesome for eating up miles and give top grip when taking advantage of the nice torque to pass quickly, but they're not exactly rally tires, with next to no sidewall and a hard RFT core.
