rough downshifting

Does anyone else notice especially rough automatic downshifting as you're braking/coasting to a stop? Seems pretty bad when shifting down to 2nd for me.

I've always wondered why I can feel the automatic downshifts when coasting. First A/T car I've ever owned that does this. (1st BMW)

Honestly, the DSG in my GTI was smoother than this.

IF I'd gotten my GTI with the DSG, I'd probably still own it.

BMWs with automatics generally do not coast when you take your foot off the gas. They engine brake lightly to reduce speed, which is presumably why you lifted the foot off. It shifts down a bit earlier than many other cars, both to increase the engine braking, and to be ready if you floor it again.

To coast, you need to put it in neutral. But unless you're hypermiling or drive through a neighborhood where engine braking is illegal, I generally don't recommend coasting.

Oh, I totally get that. It was just easier to type "coast."

I interpret "coasting" as anytime you're foot's not on either the brake, or the throttle. I don't ever take the car out of gear while moving. It is engine braking; that's always an element. What I experience is engine braking caused by automatic downshifts. I can see the tach jump when I feel the car decelerating without using any braking, and this' the first car I could actually feel the downshift when coasting down from 40 mph or so. Some times in traffic I worry because the person behind me isn't warned of any sudden slowing without showing brake lights. My car will slow down, without braking, to a very slow crawl.

To answer the OP, yes. TBH the whole car is kind of jerky and stiff compared to what i'd expect, it wants to be hustled and doesn't seem happy tootling about.

mine had a hard down shift 3 -> 2 and a hard upshift 6 -> 7. I felt this the first time with a cold engine at the first stop, after 1 or 2 km. It got worse after a road trip and driving 400 km nonstop and ending up in a traffic jam, it felt like being hit by a car in the back.
the dealer reset the gearbox settings but it only helped for a few weeks.
They changed the gearbox under warranty and problem seems solved now.

I've got a 2013 X1 28i and haven't noticed any hard shifts at all unless I'm in sports mode or really pushing it. When I coast I leave it in great and while it does slow down it's ever so slightly that even when hypermiling I don't bother going to neutral as in great the engine isn't using fuel anyway

I've had my X1 for about a week now and noticed it as well! It's a bit of an issue when I'm sitting in traffic and just crawling along, I feel it a lot then. Is this normal for BMWs?

You should not feel anyting while in "D" crawling in traffic.
You will more aware of downshifts when in manual mode.

Huh, I definitely feel it in D, especially when slowly coming to a stop.

My 2013 xdrive glides very gently, with downshifts nearly imperceptible.

What mode are you driving in? Drive? Drive Sport? Eco Pro?

Same for me, i paid special attention to it this morning.
This is in D, slowing down to stop without touching the brake.

Yeah, but you have a different transmission than I do. Engine braking, and automatic downshifts while "coasting" are quite noticeable, but not objectionable. First A/T car I've owned that does that. In bumper to bumper traffic, it must be somewhat alarming to a following driver that the car in front of them slows rapidly, without showing brake lights. BTW, the effect is more pronounced as my speed drops. No complaints about the acceleration.

That's interesting because my '13 X1 x28i coasts quite easily without dropping speed too much and while I notice the downshifts it's only when I'm really paying attention.

I know that the throttle body and transmission adapt to your driving style so I can only imagine that would be the difference.

Has anyone with issues tried to reset the throttle body and transmission?

Really smooth when using D, rpms gently fall off from about 2000 to 1000 as the car slows - the downshifts cause only small rpm pops.

x281 here. With no evident pattern this car very rarely makes a VERY harsh downshift from 2nd to 1st--always when moving at a crawl. It is sometimes quite disconcerting.

Never have seen this between any other gears.
