Car and Driver can't stand X1 xDrive28i

Read the review, they even stated that the hydraulic steering was dull with no feedback. Ride quality sucked. Not a good endorsement by any means. This is partially their fault for selecting Msport with 19in. Wheels for use In a city with bad streets. This is a far cry from the review they gave the sport line xDrive35i. I don't believe most of the review, but all the staffers essentially hated the vehicle.

Come on....a $50K Nissan Juke....that is absurd and unwarranted. Though the Juke is fun to drive.

I think there is a bit more utility than the Juke, but the comparison is warranted. I cross shopped the Juke Nismo when I was shopping for my X1 last year. The X1 is basically an expensive version of the Juke with more luxury and a nicer interior/exterior look.

As for the rough ride, I have the 17" wheels for exactly that reason, the roads around here are terrible. And mine rides nice and smooth. Not as smooth as when I had an X5, but decent enough.

Overall I did not think it was a terrible review, just somewhat average. The X1 is a compromise, as are most cars in the 30k-50k range. We are getting a car that is nice and decent at a lot of things, but not great at any one thing. You have to go up to a Porsche Macan or something in the 60k+ price range to get a "great" vehicle.

Maybe one of these years when I get rich! LOL

Mine has 355hp/400tq in a 3900 lbs small SAV.
Please tell me how a Juke stacks up to that?

Yep. $38,400 base, $45,000 well equipped with the warrantied Dinan tune. Less than that very heavily optioned 28i.
2. Bad ride?
Nope. Skip the $3000 msport and you have a better ride (not as sporty though)
3. Uninvolved ride? Versus which SUV again? A CRV, a Juke??? Lol
My favorite line was how it doesn't handle it's weight as well as BMW's other SUVs. I am sure it doesn't. Since they are all significantly heavier and worse handling! Weight is the enemy of performance. Unless you are ponying up for an X5M, you are out of luck to beat the X1 here with an SUV by BMW. Just because something "feels faster", doesn't mean it IS faster...

And the road editor who says it should have rear wheel drive?? Really?
Really useful to have an SUV that you don't want to drive when it snows

As I said in the other post: Please show me an AWD SUV that is this fast and well built for this amount of money.
Yes, the Macan S, GLA45 AMG, etc are nicer but not faster. They are both around $20k more with similar options (a different price point altogether.)

The Juke has a GTR version with 500+ horses, although only 2 or 3 were sold lol.

Exactly. The Juke is.... something different... but that engine block (from the Skyline) is a beast.

But you can't compare a Juke to a X1, with a Q3 and a GLA you could.
Juke with a Quascaj, IX35, Duster,...

Screw them review where they say 'I think that... , in my opinion..'.

Given the age of the current X1, I doubt we would see a comparo with the above SAVs until the next generation X1 bows in. Too bad. Reviewers right now compare it to much larger SUVs or cars and wondering why the X1 doesn't compete in size or performance, respectively.

We owners didn't want anything bigger. Where else can you find this combo of performance, comfort, and sportiness, at this price point. I consider it an AWD, compact, station wagon that fits my needs. If the transmission mapping of the 6spd were better, and not have the off-idle hesitation, I'd love it. The premium group leather isn't very rich, either, but since BMW charges extra for a fully functioning USB port; it's what you'd expect.

At least the 0-60 times of 6 seconds flat was consistent from day one to 40K miles...and beats the X3 at last. I wonder if BMW has tweaked the ECU maps on the sport modes in newer 28i models. I did not notice gearing difference, but they might have changed valve timing, fuel/air mix ratio, reworked throttle responses in the sport mode of later models to make them launch better. The much heavier X4 hits 60mph in just under 6 seconds, and the comparable weight 428i gran coupe did that in the the mid fives.

There are numerous things wrong with the review, but the most obvious is that it is impossible for their X28i to weigh 3800+lbs when I had my 35i on the scales and it weighed 3817 with lighter wheels (40lbs) and the catless downpipe.

The complaints about the seats are hysterical, they are the same part number as 335i seats which they previously loved. Ordering the m-sport package without paddle shifters, which is a free option? Dumbasses.

I have had X1 28i as loaners and much of what was said in the review is garbage. Csaba Csere had a polar opposite opinion.

Car reviews are opinions, just like movie reviews. Find a reviewer that you enjoy and that is conisistant, that way you will know from the review whether or not you'll like the car (or movie) no matter what the reviewer's actual "score" was.

For e real review you have to drive it yourself after reading/viewing 20 different reviews I guess.

My favorite auto reviews are the ones by The Fast Lane Car. They seem to have similar taste to my own and also seem to be very impartial.

If I could choose over, I probably would not have gone for the X1 again - just too many irritations. Interior creaking sounds with temperature changes; creaking sounds from the front doors when driving oven uneven parts; somehow I find the driving position to be somewhat skewed(?); comfort access not working properly; uncomfortable standard seats. Annoying stop/start - something jerky starts. Hesitation of the line.

Yeah, I don't have any creaking sounds or any issues with my car either. It's been very solid. That said, my purchase of the X1 was a compromise and I would have preferred getting a GLK or Range Rover Evoque, but just didn't have the budget. My X1 is a base model with a 37k MSRP. If I had been looking in the 45-50k range, I would have gotten a different vehicle.

When it's cool outside (below 60F), my window area makes slight creak/squeak noises. Goes away when it's warmer.

The programmed hesitation is annoying when you step on it to "get out of the way" and the car does nothing. I would like to be at least mostly in control of how fast I go.

I don't like the start/stop feature. I used to drive a Prius and that feature was totally fine, didn't bother me in the least. The X1 isn't smooth in that regard. I can live with it, so not a big deal.

My interior creaks a lot since i have 30k miles. Plus I have noticed that the doorncover for those without nav makes a popping noise when I turn hard. Like something is flexing

They lost me when they complained about the seats on an M Sport, they probably were too stupid to know how to adjust them. BMW sport seats are fantastic so they are ignorant. Then the one guy says why would you buy when when you can get a Mazda CX5, how about the Mazda is slow as hell 0-60 in 7.6 just for starters. That's like saying why buy a 328 when you can get a Chevy Cruz for half the price. They always bitch about the cost of options on BMW's but read reviews and they rarely bitch about the costs on Audi's or Mercedes.

Much of the high cost can be avoided by buying CPO. I got a dealer owned 35i with Premium, lighting pkg, and cold weather pkg. for 33k. It had under 6k miles, and when I priced it against anything comparable in performance/utility, the price differential was significant. I'm sure I could have done even better than that as they don't seem to be very popular around the NW. Let someone else pay the depreciation.

I agree with most of the posts here. Everyone that bought the X1 did so knowing there were compromises. I wanted something that had some utility, was light on gas, looked nice, felt nice, had some prestige, and something that I could legitimately enjoy driving! The X1 was the ONLY option around that met all of my needs.

I don't care too much about the review. I love my X1. I had a loaner 328i with sport line, etc, for about a week. I could not WAIT to get my X1 back! It's exactly what I need - no more, no less.
