Another grid penalty likely for Alonso after crash

Another grid penalty likely for Alonso after crash

http://www.f1fanatic.co.uk/2015/06/3...o-after-crash/

Fernando Alonso may be forced to take further penalties this weekend as McLaren has confirmed he is likely to need another change of engine.

Alonso took a total of 25 grid place penalties at the Austrian Grand Prix due to power unit and gearbox changes. However his team has confirmed the new unit sustained damage when he and Kimi Raikkonen collided on the opening lap of the race.

“We believe that Fernando’s power unit has sustained damage from the accident and it may be necessary to change the engine,” said Honda’s senior managing officer Yasuhisa Arai.

Arai also raised the possibility of Jenson Button also needing another engine and taking further penalties at his home race.

“As for Jenson’s power unit this weekend, the issue is still under investigation,” he said, confirming a “sensor failure” ended Button’s race in Austria. Button was also penalised 25 grid places at the race.

“Honda is not looking to put any hardware updates in place for the British Grand Prix,” Arai added, “but we will optimise the power unit setting to the updated aero parts planned on the chassis.”

Agreed. It seems like there have been more wheel to wheel battles in WEC, GP2 and DTM than F1.

Just remind yourselves of the Senna/Prost years at McLaren; Piquet/Mansell years @ Williams and Schumacher's years at Ferrari (most of them anyways). The WC was sewn up by Spa with Schu and McLaren won 15/16 races in a season. Not only that but they were between 1-3 seconds faster than 3rd on the grid and lapped all but 3rd place in most races. So, in the grand scheme of things, F1 now is a lot more competitive than it was in the old days. That all being said, I prefer the old days (more noise, more characters, etc.)

A team dominating isn't something I have an issue with. I just want to enjoy the race with a lot of overtaking and strategy, not just a fuel saving carousel. I literally fast forwarded through the entire previous race after the safety car and am seriously reconsidering going to Austin this year.

Hopefully Nico can win in front of the British fans to stir up some drama. Wishful thinking, Hammy is going to be on his A game all weekend. Preparing for a snoozer.

Exactly. At least Mercedes will let their two drivers go at it, unlike Schumi and Barrichello. It isn't any different than the past, just less noisy.

There are just a lot of Mercedes haters, or Lewis haters, or ex-Red Bull/Vettel fans, or Ferrari fans that just don't like who is running away with the championship.

To be honest current racing does have more passing, compared to Schumi's dominate seasons. The DRS has contributed to a lot more overtakes than in the past. So many more tracks use to be follow the leader.

If you were a Lewis fan, I bet you wouldn't be fast forwarding.

As a Ferrari fan, I actually like seeing Ferrari having to try really hard. It's interesting seeing what the results are going to be each race. If Ferrari was in Mercedes position right now and just dominating, yes I'd be happy, but bored. Knowing how the race is going to end before it starts isn't fun. (Excluding accidents and reliability issues)

You're way off-base on the Mercedes/Lewis haters thing. He's one of the most widely liked drivers ever. I like Lewis, but watching one team running away with every race is boring. I was a fan of both Vettel and Schumi, yet in their dominant years I did a lot of fast-forwarding.

Also, I think that all teams let their 2 drivers compete with each other, until such time that it makes no sense from a team standpoint. Barrichello just never got that close to Schumi (points-wise) to risk the driver's championship. Same with Webbo and VET. HAM and ROS just happen to score pretty evenly.

Also, looking at the years that red bull was dominating, 2 of the years was veryy close between Alonso and Vettel. 1 year had 7 different winners in the first 7 races. All 4 seasons were pretty mixed up, It wasn't red bull 1 2 in every race.

This survey taken by the Grand Prix Drivers Association included 217,756 respondents from 194 countries. It echoes what many have indicated here...F1 needs to be more competitive.
Personally, my own view is more of a gripe on the technical side (which was also addressed in the survey). The formula needs to be less restrictive - less of a "spec" formula.
The year to year, era to era dominance by driver/car combination has always been a historical part of the sport and will probably never change. What I would hate to see are rules that would give rise to "contrived results" entering this sport.

Warm British GP expected after record heat

Warm British GP expected after record heat

http://www.f1fanatic.co.uk/2015/07/0...r-record-heat/

Britain saw record-breaking temperatures for July in some parts of the country yesterday, and at Silverstone temperatures exceeded 32C.

This is far hotter than we’ve seen at most recent British Grands Prix, and although the coming days are expected to be cooler it should still be a very pleasant weekend for the spectators – a far cry from the persistent rain of 2012.

Cooler air from the west has brought temperatures down on Thursday, but by Friday they will be rising again. A sunny start to practice should see temperatures reaching the 25C mark. There is a good chance of overnight rain on Friday, after which Saturday will bring similar conditions.

At this stage race day looks like being a shade cooler and possibly cloudy. There is also a slight risk of a light rain shower on Sunday, but the likelihood of that happening will depend on how the weather systems shift over the next 72 hours.

Manor revises livery after new sponsor deal

Manor revises livery after new sponsor deal

http://www.f1fanatic.co.uk/2015/07/0...-sponsor-deal/

Manor has revised its livery after announcing a deal with a new sponsor.

The team will run with the logos of shipping containers company Flex-Box on its sidepods from this weekend’s race, and will now have blue colouring on the side of its cars.

“This is our second partnership announcement in just a few weeks,” said team principal John Booth, “so these are exciting times in our team’s development”.

Another race weekend to be relieved that Mclaren qualified infront of Manor.

Don't be too comfortable, I hear Manor is working on some improvements...also the tune seems to have changed slightly in the NBC studio from marveling at McLarens progress to marveling that they made it to quali at all...

What a complete an utter cluster. McLaren need new management, all of them and fast starting with RD. The company is a disgrace.
