I wouldn't mind doing that... with a test-drive X1 of course!

Yeah, there's just not enough ground clearance to make it a proper "off road" vehicle. Slippery pavement? No problem, though.

After doing quite a few 4WD drives, I'm quite impressed with that actually, it does better than I thought it would.

I have to admit that it wouldn't match my old series 2, but then again, my series 2 wouldn't do everything else the beemer will do......

Can you give any example of what sort of offroading you have done with your X1.

For example did your drives include any:
fast dirt roads
Off road tracks with large rocks
Off road tracks with deep ruts
steep ascents
steep descents
any loose soft sand
any muddy bog holes

Also did you use any of the 4wd technology i.e DTC, Hill descent control, etc

Thanks

Yohans, apologies, we haven't got our X1 yet - and we've ordered the 2WD version.

The 4x4 driving I've done has been in Range Rovers, Land Rovers (series 2, 3 and defenders), Izuzu Troopers and a bit in Fronteras - This has been a mix of farmland, general forest tracks and also specialised 4WD courses that employ a complete mix of the things you ask about.

My point was that in the video of the X1, it did better than I expected - In our case however, we're buying this for the road and that's why we've gone for a 2WD - If I'm going to play off road, I'll buy something I don't mind scratching !!

Wyresoft. My mis-understanding. I read into your message that you had been 4wd-ing with the X1. Thanks for clarifying this.

I agree, the video does make it look pretty impressive.

Not bad at all. xDrive system seems to work very well. Wonder if the Audi Q3 and Mercedes BLK will do the same, be better or worse off-road. On-road, I think, allways the same, BMW sport, Mercedes comfort, and Audi a bit of both.

Nice course just set up for the x1 with packed dirt. Horrible wheel travel. Get a real truck if you want to off road and keep the x1 for the road.

X1 did it in a good way, but there will not be so many putting it in these kind of tracks..
This is a great on road SUV, too bad for the poor interior quality seen in the entry level models

Listen up. They are not 4WD's. Don't do it. Rent a 4wd if you need to go off road.
Dirt/slippery roads/hard beach is about the practical limit unless you have too much money.
Yes is can do it, but don't.

Well XDrive is 4WD, technically AWD. I agree though, for really challenging off road work, you need more ground clearance, large tires and lots of wheel travel. But from the video it looks like the X1 is well up to the task of the occasional muddy path.

Not bad, but neither would it match a Toyota RAV4 that I am sure retails for less. My 3.5 Sport RAV4 surprised me when I was shopping and did some real snow offroad test. It actually did better than the X3, so I got that. It was even faster than the X3, and also my E46 330ci to boot. I'd get the X5 if I must get a BMW ute that needs to do some off roading on occassion.

Honestly, I've had the 2002, the 2002 tii, the 320, and the 318 on many dirt tracks and jeep trails. But the 318 is a little too low for roads with rocks in them - and all survived over 200,000K miles. I'd be thrilled to off road in an X1. The mud is a pain though - the mechanics really complain about it. But we always try to avoid the big holes in the road.
