I run 225/45-18, but I'd also consider 235s as well. 245s would look nice, but would be less than ideal in deeper snow. I don't know, I might enjoy the dry performance of 245s if I was running performance winters vs. full-on snows.

ya I was looking at the thread about people wih 17s, but I'm thinking I want to stick with 18s. I'll probably see some deeper snow here and there, so 225/45 is probably my go to.
thanks boys. |

Is the clearance close on the face of the wheel or the barrel? |

I step down from factory 18s (225/45/18) to 225/50/17s. More side wall and the tire calculators state it's only about a 4% difference in diameter. Which is pretty good for the speedo and my OCD.

17" during winter, staggered 19" during summer.
The wheel well doesn't have good clearance for larger than 17" if you live somewhere where frozen sludge will stick. The larger sidewall (more air volume) also helps when driving over ice chunks. For nordic conditions, the X1 is not ideal - there's no room for chains in the wheel wells, regardless of wheel diameter. And no way to switch from AWD to non-differential 4WD. And the tow point is only on one side of the car. |
