Petrol or Diesel

OK, new thread to see who went for petrol and who went for diesel. If you want you can also indicate why you went for one and not the other.

Me, easy decision as we only have diesels in the UK.

2011 BMW X1 23d  [7.66]
Diesel (23d)...fastest model available, 400Nm of torque, still good fuel economy. Win.

Although diesel was the only one available in UK, I'd have selected the exact same engine had Petrol been an option (I've got the x20d). I had the same engine in my 1er coupe, choosing that over its petrol siblings - I found the drive pretty enjoyable, even after coming to it from a Z4MC

Diesel. Wanted more than the 18i and the performance of the 20d is more than adequate on the road, even on the rare occasion when the car was pretty fully loaded. Torque is just great.

Diesel, company car, only way to claim fuel costs.

Only petrol here in Canada. The new turbo four should do all right and not sound like a garden tractor.

Actually the diesel sounds quite good, quite a nice roar under acceleration.

Petrol..... As the diesel is 6k more expensive in Greece.

Hope the fuel consumption will not drive me crazy though! The test drive did not seem to fall below 12l/100km!
As petrol is 1.7 euro per lt this is a 20 euro per 100km drive!!! (ps. It is the sdrive 1.8)

Thank god I only drive 5 km to work!

Your test drive of 12l/100km - was this in traffic/highway?

Either your calculation is flawed, or your engine has a problem.

No way you can do 12L on highway steady cruising at 110 klics with a 4 cylinder engine of current technology. Your engine would be pulling easily at 1500 RPM.
I used to drive a 2004 Dodge Magnum 3.5L V6 auto and 12/1OO were my numbers driving downtown Toronto ! Even my old 1996 Caprice V8 was giving me a better mileage on hwy than your X1 !!

Weird... Does your dashboard cluster have a dynamic (real time) fuel milage indicator as on a Diesel model?
How did you manage to accurately calculate mileage during a test drive?

Konstantinos - I also think 12/100km when cruising is way too high - this is unacceptable and a case for your dealer.

This was the test drive car, hopefully this will not be the case for the normal car 1.8s drive petrol (the test was the same though)...

I am calculating the consumption based on the needle on the dashboard, not through any other way. My car is in customs now and will get it in two-three weeks so I am a bit afraid that my car will have the same consumption..

I hope it was just the test drive. We are talking about petrol not diesel in both cases as diesel from what I have read from this forum has a much lower consumption

Ah.

That's interesting.

It would lead to believe that at a constant highway 110 km/h, the engine was roughly at 2000 rpm. As if you were on a lower gear than necessary...

Not sure if you mentioned whether your test car was auto or standard, so in my opinion, assuming it was a standard transmission, it seems to me that you were cruising in 5th gear (and not 6th) for the indicator needle to remain around 12l...
In such cruising mode as 110 on highway with hardly any alteration to engine rotation, a soft press on the gas pedal in 6th gear is way enough to maintain momentum, and it gets the needle around the 5L mark (below 10 anyway), and the engine rpm around 1400/1500...

Now if the mileage indicator was telling 12L AND you are positive you were in 6th at 110 km/h, the car had a problem.
