Or if there is a problem with the battery, ie below a certain charge.

Or on a hill, 15% gradient I think,

Or if it's been manually turned off.

As Gatekeeper says, outside temp is the most common reason.

Start/Stop may not engage if:

- Outside temp below or at 3.0°C
- Temperature within the car is too cold/hot (A/C in the summer needs the engine running)
- Battery charging lvl too low.
- Frequent engaging of the Start/Stop may temporarily disable it (longer stop'n go streaks within traffic jams)
- Probably some other stuff ;-)

The temperature outside was very cold between 2 and 6 C° i think. So it's probably the reason.

thank you for your answers

Happens to me sometimes that I inadvertently press the auto start/stop disable button when manipulating around the 12V jack/audio input area. The bad thing is that when you do it at a traffic light or something, the car wouldn't restart anymore (just as when you unlock your seat belt for a second, which I view as a design flop )

Also, I've got a friend with a 1er whose start/stop system stopped working for some reasons after about a year of driving the car. Been to the service several times, bmw claims everything's ok, but as soon as he gets the car back from the service, the engine wouldn't stop anymore, regardless the outside and driving conditions. Anyone with similar experiences?

Did not know it did that. I don't have it on the X1 as its an auto but do have it in the Mini. Hate the bloody thing and always switch it off as part of my routine when I start the car. Anyone know how you can disable it permanently?

Yes it has, works with the hill start function on the breaks, stop/start and also something to do with the alarm, but I forgot what the dealer said about it. Maybe in the cars manual somewhere.

Ps: actually not sure if the manual X1 comes with hill start control...anyone got any idea?

I just hope that no sound alert goes off when you're at more than 15deg, like the sound alert for the seat belt, for low outside temperature, for the deactivated cruise control, when low on fuel etc. etc. It looks as if they thought the car was to be driven by dumb guys, who can't figure out by themeselves what's going on unless you keep prompting them with some kind of intrusive noise

Er... if I judge by some of the motorists around me on the road, they were not completely wrong...
