No bonnet insulation/sound proofing inside my hood? all the location holes are there for holding it in but no sound proofing fitted, is this correct or is mine missing

Mine does not have it either. I think general sound proofing is one of the shortcommings of the X1. Maybe a bit of money saving from BMW and it shows here and there. Try a 3-series with the same engine as your X1 and you will notice the difference in noise levels, ie 3 is a lot quieter.

William, this is a good question, why not call your dealer.

However, Autocar's test noted that they did not experience the diesel engine in the sDrive20d to be so loud as in other BMs, and they put it down to reduced noise insulation to reduce costs, unfortunately.

Got in touch with my local BMW dealer today to enquire about the missing bonnet sound insulation and was informed it is not fitted at the factory and there is no listing for it in the parts list,
so why did BMW go to all the bother in drilling the inside of bonnet for attaching it when it doesn't exist?

Interstingly enough, when we all started getting our 135i's when they first came out, we found it to be hit and miss with the bonnet insulation. Some cars had it, while others did not. There was a good thread on it in the 1 series forums (imagine it's well buried by now). Does anyone that already has their X1 have the liner or are they all missing?

As far as I know there is no bonnet insulation on any X1. It seems that the 1series also has no insulation for a few years now. 1er drivers who retrofitted the bonnet insulation said, that they didn't notice any difference in noise level.

I think for both cost and weight reduction, BMW definitely reduced the amount of sound insulation in the X1

I also read that the insulation serves as paint protection from the engine heat. Maybe on smaller engines or more airy compartments, this isn't as much of a problem.....?

I was actually wondering if the opposite could be true in that the insulation would make the engine bay too hot. Don't know if thats possible. My 2.0d gets very hot under the bonnet (hood) though. Read somewhere that this could happen when the diesel particle filter burns off the condensate from time to time.
