I saw my first X1 on the road today in Canada
Actually, this is the 2nd (Montreal Auto Show in January) but I passed it on the highway.
It took me a while to recognize... I fit thought that it was a Tucson but they are actually very different. What surprised me is that its fuel economy is not that much better from the latest 6-cyl. For example, the revised 2012 306HP C350 4-Matic with direct injection get a better Euro combined cycle (7.6L/100km vs 7.9 for the X1). When I spent some time in it last January, it was clear to me that its build quality was a generation late compared to the X3. The X3 is about 10% more but I feel that it is worth it IMO, although its fuel economy is about 15% worse. |

You have to consider the effects of the higher ride height (which results in a higher drag), when you compare the X1 to a sedan like the C Class or the 3series. For example the X1 18d has a consumption of 5.2 l whereas the 318d touring consumes 0.7 l less, using the same engine.

I guess that the smaller the engine, more aerodynamic takes a toll on fuel economy. The contrary is probably as true as well.
The Q5 is only 1 mpg in city worse than the A4Q (it is more than 300lbs heavier) but on the highway the gap is larger. Overall difference in combin3ed rating is less 10%. Applying this factor of correction to the X1, it would be 7.3L/100km vs the C350 4 Matic 7.6. Minor difference that still shows that the N20 is not an interesting option technically when you can have much more (+50% power) that consumes just marginally more. |
