Anyone here feels that the 'technology package' is a rip off?
Anyone here feels that the 'technology package' is a rip off?
In Canada, that package cost $2500 +tax. And all that is really for the screen in the middle. I was really debating if I should order that. it's very expensive. However, if I don't, it will be kindda ugly with a compartment replacement. Btw, is that even a touch screen? I forgot to ask the salesman Thx |

It's not a touchscreen. I could see how it could be perceived as a "rip off", but I think buying a new car in 2014 with no screen/nav or no xenon lights is silly. Lots of people regret the decision to compromise with a underspec'd car, and then face the inability or extremely high cost to retrofit a option later on.

Thanks for the clarification.
I am not understanding why it is not touchscreen... Its $2500 and year 2014! Btw, what type of lights does x1 comes with by default? Can Xenon lights be added/modded/DIY later? |

I was just reviewing my build:
+m sports @ $2900 - I like the look +premium @ @$1900 - No choice. Since I need that sunroof +technology @ $2500 - No choice. Since navi screen seems important +leather seats @ $900 - Just preferred it Now with an extra $1200 for Xenon Lights... I think this will be an overkill x1. Which that budget, wouldn't it be more wise to spend it on another model like x3 instead? |

If you are going to option up an X1 then get the Ultimate package, it will save you a good amount if you are wanting all the options. Don't know if it is available in Canada though. Best way to save money on a BMW is not to buy new, instead buy used or CPO. That's what I did, bought a 2014 X1 x35i MSport Ultmate with 15K miles that stickered at over $49K for under $36K, all I did was lose 11 months warranty on a basically new car that still looks and smells new.

I would not be happy with an X1 stripped. I test drove one and it was just too barren. Even though having almost all the options was expensive, I am much more happy with the car and plan to keep it at least 8 years. The size of the X1 is perfect for me. The X3, even if only $5-6k more for a comparably optioned one, would have been too big and traded off size for handling.
I don't know if the tech package includes the rearview camera but I think you will be kicking yourself for not getting those. |

When I ordered mine I hmmm'd and haaaa'd at the idea of buying the tech pack, I ended up not getting it and I don't regret it. If you don't have it, you don't miss it.
I wondered why it wasn't a cheaper option because you essentially get a screen in any new vehicle as of 2013 or so. To me, it was a rip off and I had no real reason or desire to have the screen. I do like the cubby though. Good place to put sun glasses and my wallet. The built in nav would be kinda cool but, that's all I'd ever need the screen for. I did however, get everything else. Executive, premium, xenon (a must), sirius, leather, lumbar etc.

Would you rather they include the screen as standard and raise MSRP by 2k? What they have done is a marketing strategy to sell the x1 with a low price of entry.
No different than what they do with the 320i where a folding rear seat is a $475 option. Don't like it? Don't check the box. I didn't mind so I checked them all on my x1. |

Sorry for the noob question here.
Regarding the xenon lights, are they the same as 'angels eyes' or 'LUX 8' (or whatever it is really called)? Can't I DIY upgrade later? Its not $900 here in Canada, its $1200! |

There's an expensive possibility of upgrading later. The $1200 is a steal. Almost everybody on here with the halogens regrets not ticking the box. Honestly, it makes the car look so much nicer, and makes it much easier for you to see at night. Yes, even in the city.

Ya I agree, combination of both would have made iDrive awesome coz having to type the address is a PITA. My English accent isn't good so voice command sometimes can be even more frustrating Here base model comes with business nav pre-installed but still I opted for pro with an additional price of AUD1,150 (just for pro nav) because of the same fear of regretting later. So, I added everything since I plan to keep it.

Why would you want a touch-screen in an automobile? Every time you make an input, it smears the screen which makes it very hard to see at times. My wife's Ford Edge has one, and it's got to be constantly cleaned. I must be the last person in America that doesn't need a nav unit, to find places. If I hadn't bought COP, I'd de-order the sunroof, too. I couldn't get in a M package one the dealer had very easilly because of the seat bolsters. (My neck is fused from C2-T2) I did get the premium package, and the "leather" seats don't seem any nicer than the "Pleather" ones.

I went with a base x28 model and love it. I did get the premium package and upgraded to 18" wheels/tires. I use google maps on my kenu mounted iPhone with blue tooth connected "voice directions" through the radio and it works great! Seems better than the expensive BMW Nav system lots of people on here complain about. I don't miss the options on my previous loaded SUV. I do like the way better gas mileage!

I'm really glad I got my tech package. It does provide a lot of information, and capability that you would otherwise not have access to. For me, it was money well spent.

I don't regret not getting them at all. I have a short commute that is lit up like the Fourth of July. I am out of town on business right now and the rental has the lights and it is nice on country roads at dark so if that was where I was driving I would get them. I also didn't get the technology package. Really getting all this stuff doesn't make sense. If you want that stuff get the three series wagon.

Well you get Bluetooth with your phone. Do you mean audio input? The audio system is poor quality already ...I can only imagine how terrible it would be with a Bluetooth connectioon.
