Slight feather on inside/outside edges....
...of front tires. I have about 5200 miles. Does this sound like an alignment issue or am I just due for a rotation?
Any advice on rotation, 'X' to rear or whatever? Thanks, Moon |

Wear on both edges means really low air pressure, but i don't think you've explained what you see.
Just get a tread depth gauge and measure all tires to see if alignment is ok, and measure tire pressure. Rotation is nearly always last resort tire saving measure and can rarely be done anymore. My X1 s28i M Sport wears the fronts more on the inside and the rears more on the outside. Also, the fronts are about 9/32nds, and the rears about 7/32nds at 6000 miles on staggered 18 inch wheels. |

Tire pressure-wise I've been checking and using the factory rec'd 35/41, at least until recently.
The car has been a pretty relentless understeerer, and I've dropped the rear pressure to 35 in an effort to make it a bit more neutral, which it has. Wondering if I shouldn't have done that sooner. There's no reason not to rotate the tires; I'm open to suggestion as to pattern. Moon |

If you have square setup rotate tires front to rear.
I've sold tires for 40+ years, and I've seen some tread separate from going side to side or backwards from original run in. I only see savings from driving tire wear evened out. If the non drive tires are feathering , alignment is the answer. If you are going to buy same tire next time just buy the one that wore faster. A rotated tire will have accelerated wear for a few thousand miles to wear in again anyway so cost savings is mostly getting ALL tires to wear out at once so you can get set of different tires. |

With my staggered 8 x 18 and 9 x18 Pirelli performance tires I've tried several different pressures on the track.
When I ran less in rear ( 44 hot front- 42 hot rear) it understeered worse. I seem to like about 43-44 hot front and 45-46 hot rear. That's about 38 front and 40 rear cold @ 60 deg approx. I'm tempted to put some 15cm spacers on the fronts to stop high speed sway, but it might cause more understeer. I tried tracking without traction control and had too much wheel spin on acceleration. X1 feels fairly neutral at initial turn in. It just won't let rear end hang out. |

when I've rotated tires (and I've rotated tires on many BMWs), I always move the rears straight ahead and crossed the fronts when moving them to the rear. Never an issue. Make sure that the tires are not directional if you plan to cross rotate.

It's pothole season here in Westsylvania; normally I get the cars lined up once the worst of the bomb craters have been repaired.
I'll likely do this in a month. Unhappily, tires and alignment are not part of the comprehensive maintenance, which does piss me off. I'm still on the horns of a dilemma whether to X the tires; the dealer says what the majority here have said, which is simply to go front to rear. In the past, I've X'ed to the rear, especially if there was any feathering, to counteract that wear. Moon |
