Does Anyone Else Go through a Lot of Windshields?
I was thinking about something driving home today. I bought my 2014 X1 in March of 2015, I've put about 60,000 miles on it since. And *knock on wood* It's been pretty reliable. The water pump is a pain in the as*, and I dread the thought of doing it again, except for one thing. I'm on my 4th windshield.
Yes, I have replaced the windshield 3 times. The OEM one lasted about 30k miles, the next one about 20k miles, and the third about the same. Now, the second and the third replacements were both BMW factory windshields. Now that the car is older, the insurance company wouldn't pay for OEM anymore, so I've got an aftermarket one. But the point is, I've had 1 windshield replaced per car before, but never like this. I've had 5/6 other vehicles and maybe 2 of them had had a windshield replaced, and I've driven the X1 significantly less miles. Is there something about the shape of the windshield that makes them more prone to crack from a rock chip? Anyone else experience this with their E84 X1? My ex's mom had an X3 for 140,000 miles and was on her original windshield. |

Wow, 4 windshields? Mine has a chip from a HUGE rock on the highway, that's since turned into a crack across the whole thing. But other than that, no issues. I'd have replaced by now, but there was a mix up with insurance, and i've been too busy with other things to sort it out. Luckily, my crack runs only 1 - 2 inches just above the dash, so not very noticable unless the sun hits it at just the right angle. I'm at just over 60k miles.

No. I use seatbelts.
To answer your post.... our X1 is still using original windshield. There is a spider line chip that has been around from 6 years ago. Applied the windshield liquid thingy. Hasn't spread since. |
