xDrive28i is good for 22/33, 3 mpg better on the highway than BMW estimated

Well now, 27(35i)->33(28i) up from 30 IS meaningful, point for the 28i. But how the hell can this heavier, taller, AWD vehicle with the exact same mechanicals match the 328i for highway fuel economy post EPA revision? Something stinks.
Quote from C/D:
Update 8/29: The EPA has released its estimates for BMW’s new X1 and the Bavarians’ 2.0-liter turbo four–powered models are more-efficient than BMW predicted. The rear-drive sDrive28i is rated for 24 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway, which is 1 mpg more on the highway than BMW claimed. The all-wheel-drive xDrive28i is good for 22/33, 3 mpg better on the highway than BMW estimated. The turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six–powered xDrive35i is certified for 18/27, precisely as BMW foretold.

I've had my xDrive 28i for two weeks now and am getting a combined 27 mpg according to the onboard computer. I'd say my driving has been approximately 60% city and 40% highway miles.

Crikey! I don't think I can justify the 35i anymore. 3mpg was not significant but 6mpg most certainly is and the xDrive28i will still hit 60 in less than 6.5 seconds. The final piece for us will be driving both models and seeing if the 28i has enough oomph.

This actually makes a little sense if you followed the roll out of the F30. Currently:

328i - 23/34 - manual ; 23/33 - auto
335i - 20/30 - manual ; 23/33 - auto

Which if you think about the auto mileage figures, seems totally contrived. The EPA did a last minute down grade of the 328i automatic right before it was released, if I recall, the gap was nearly equal to what you see on the 335i between manual and automatic, so roughly 26/36 for the auto. Which I still believe is the realistic rating for an auto F30. So the E84 matching the auto 335i and 328i makes sense, if you understand the EPA played a little monkey business with the 328i auto ratings.

In my experience, it will likely be a bigger gap. We have a 135i with the six speed automatic. My wife has a very short commute and it typically gets 16 mpg. A loaner F30 328i (with the 8s auto) returned 24 mpg on the same commute.

The transmission makes a huge difference and allows the 4 cylinder with a narrower power band to feel as quick in city driving as the 6 with the older transmission. Clearly in full throttle situations and at triple digit speeds, the six holds a noticeable advantage, but in city driving situations, I don't feel much, if any advantage, and the efficiency gains are certainly a huge advantage.

Yeah, makes lot of sense, like BMW's check didn't clear EPAs numbers seem completely made up and no better illustration than the F30 to highlight that. 335i gets the same as 328 with same auto (bullshit), but 328 gets 4 better than 335 with manual, really? I understand they don't physically test every drivetrain variant but these numbers have no semblance of reality and the EPA has to straighten this mess out.

What about ECO PRO mode? Maybe that will tweak the 35i numbers a little.

Coming from an X3 3.0 that was 17/25, the X1 35i will be a step up in fuel economy for us (if my wife can keep her foot out of it).

My 135i is worse still, but, dammit, it's too much fun to drive to worry about fuel economy.

My wife is getting 10.1km/l after a year of ownership of her 2.8 Driving is really 95% urban.
On the one big trip (99% highway) the mileage improved dramatically.

I just drove a several hundred mile trip with the 35. I did 100 mile stretch with eco pro mode on and was getting exactly 27mpg if you're light on the throttle.

If I drive aggressively around 90mph it gets around 23mpg.

Good to know 27 is attainable, 23 isn't too bad either- that's about as good as our recently departed XT Forester 5MT could muster (23 not 27). Would Xdrive28i owners please weigh in. Is 33 realistic?
