2014 Map Update Notice

Got an email this morning from BMW USA telling me there is a 2014 map update for my X1. I am going to check to see whether this update might already be in my car, since I took delivery within the last few weeks, and if it isn't I will see if I can get BMW to agree the update should not cost me $250. But for those of you picking up cars with Nav soon, make sure you get the most recent map version, or an agreement to give it to you, before you pick it up, just in case.... and then next update we can all buy a Garmin with lifetime maps for $150, or just use our cell phones...

I got a similar message about a month after I took delivery of my X1 in Nov of 2012. I went round and round with BMWNA and my selling dealer about the update. They both told me I would have to purchase it. Clearly not satisfied with this, I went to a different BMW dealer where I knew one of the SAs. He said that it should have been updated at the port before it went to the selling dealer. Anyway, he did the update for free and I've not returned to the selling dealer since. Don't bother with BMWNA...they are nitwits. Tell your dealer that the car should have been delivered with the current map database and you'd like for them to update it for you free of charge.
IIRC, map updates are very expensive. You must pay for the update(unless your servicing dealer has already bought the database), a license key, and labor to do the installation.

I took my X1 in for the annual oil change about 6 weeks ago and they said there was a recall to install a free map update on my 2013. I didn't have 2-3 hours to wait so I passed on it until my next visit.

Yes, you get a minimum of one free oil change per year.

Cool thanks. Still about two months to go, but good to know.

Is there anyway to backup the map data that's stored on the hard drive to a DVD and then use it in another BMW?

They also reset the annual mileage countdown at 12,000 miles from 15,000 before so no more 15-16K oil changes.

Doesn't that only apply to cars built after the change? I'll check the computer when I pick it up, but I'd imagine it will still say 15k miles. The good news for us is that we never drive 15k miles in a year, so we'll always rely on the low mileage annual change, but I think for all 2013 owners, we're stuck with the old mileage numbers.

I had my oil changed 2 months ago and the oil change interval changed to 12000 on my MY2013.

Probably.

If you don't have QNX experience, the answer is no to all three.

You can surely take out the drive and mount the partitions on an embedded development station, and back up the files.
You can likewise surely copy them over to another BMW's HD.
You can possibly then update the databases to recognize the new files.

It's not worth it. Even though BMW overcharges horribly for this upgrade, and it goes against the image they try to give of "everything except gas included for four years".
My main gripe with it is that you can't try before you buy. If none of the roads I drive on have been updated, it would be pointless to upgrade. Paying this much just to find out there's nothing new for me would be money out the window.

Mine was built in July 2012 and purchased in August of 2012 so it applies to all of them. I know when this change was announced initially the press release said either later builds or 2014 models but what a way to piss off customers if they did that. Mine has already counted down to 11,000.

Cool, thanks for the good news. I forgot to check when I got it back today, but do know that the map update was free.

You can get a free oil change at 12, 24, 36 and 48 thousand miles - that would be four, not three.
If you drive less than that, you'll only get one per year. Which may still give you four, if you take advantage of the leeway.

Unfortunately they are not truly free. Those maintenance costs are embedded in the purchase price.

On 2013 X1, oil changes are every 15k miles, not 12k. Mine looks like its going to be at arond 16k, according to computer. So even if they re-set to 12,000 after first oil change, I would still only get 3....

Most likely it's not possible to copy tha mapdata AND use it on another vehicle.
The map data itself is widely available. Your car needs a license code to which is calculated against your VIN to access the new map data.

Just copying your windows installation from one hard drive to another (cloning or other methods) will require another activation of windows since the hardware has changed.

Map update on a 2014 X1

Can one of you confirm that the latest X1 delivered the end of September has the latest map update?

Two notes the mapdata is a third party item that is sold and installed by BMW. All the luxury vehicles that I have had owned sell the mapdata for around the same price.
Yes we pay for service in the price of the vehicle. When compared to other similar priced vehicles it is very nice not to have to pay for fluids and service while you are paying for your vehicle. With Lexus I had to pay for a computer reset ($150.00) every 6000 miles and an oil change ($250.00+) every 12000 miles.
