Maintenance X1 35i
Just bought an X1 35i MSPT with 57,300KM (35,800mi approx). Just wanted to know some of your thoughts in terms of the maintenance.
So at this mileage now what do you guys suggest. Just had the oil & filter and microfilter done. Im doing the rear brakes today so at the same time should I do the Brake Fluid? I know BMW says the tranny fluid is "lifetime" but we all know that is complete bs... Anything guys? Should I do the plugs too? I have the schedule from BAV but just wanted some ideas from other enthusiasts. |

You are a bit early to worry about anything but oil and filter changes. At around 60k miles, replace transmission fluid, transfer case fluid, differential fluids, and plugs. Also consider brake fluid and power steering fluid at that point. I've been working through all of these, one at a time, since 65k.

From your other post (FYI, it helps to post the same question 1 time instead of 3+. You won't get answers any faster asking the same thing multiple times on the same forum board)
I just did my spark plugs this past weekend at 58k (did them myself). One of my coil packs did break down under the rubber boot, so I had to replace one of those as well. So far, I've just done oil changes - I'll stick to my 6-7k mile intervals, did one at 51.5k and 58k. There's not a lot of time for me between them (2-3 months) but I can hear a difference in the sound of the engine when I change the oil even then. After my next oil change, I'll look at servicing the other fluids - I want to keep this car to 200k (at least 150k so it's paid off fully). |

just pay attention to all fluids, even the one that BMW say is lifetime, is not. no fluid can last a lifetime. no such tech yet.
everything else that would break is just luck. you can only do so must for preventive maint. |

Yeah I hear you. Basically 5W40 every 7000 Miles Liqui Moly. Brake Fluid change was done last year 6000miles ago. Diff/Transfer Case fluid anything on that? BAV says every 3-4 years? My transmission shop says that's overkill. What do you think ?

According to BMW it is "lifetime" fluid. I don't like that idea, but I think every 3-4 years might be a bit of overkill. I would think every 5-6 years or 50K-60K miles would be reasonable. I don't have any data to back that up, however, and maybe BAV does?

I heard transfer case fluid has a chance of messing things up? |

I had my transfer case serviced by my local dealer (one of the only fluid changes I had them do). It's one of the trickiest fluid changes on this car because of fill plug access and limited space inside the case (tough to get a hose down there!).
If anything is messed up from the that service, it's on the dealer!! |

Call me paranoid but I hate paying for a service that I can't verify was done afterwards. If BMW is calling transfer case fluid lifetime, how many of these does a dealer do anyways? Maybe they can mess things up and say it had nothing to do with the service.
