Any Calgary peeps in the BMWCSA? I'll be going for a cruise Saturday with them.

Mark, looks like I can only do silver or gold. Leaving towards gold since silver looks too OEM

I'm 6'3 215... agree that the X1 is just too small. When my lease is up I will be moving to the X5 as well. There is no room between the back of the drivers seat and the rear passenger seat. Plus the gas mileage is nothing to write home about.

My cousin has an X3 and its horrible with room. The X5 has an extra 6 inches on the sides.

What colour is your X1 Twix? Work has a bunch of different Silvers to choose from and a couple of other colours that may be closer to your original choice. Did Mark Lacey mention Burning Black (BKB) as an option? In fairness, Work do seem to have cut the colour options back a bit in the last few years

I don't have as many pics as Mr Lacey obviously, but between the wife and I, we've been through a whole bunch of different colours that you could use for reference.....this might not be the full list, but it's what I can remember right now:-

GLD - Gold - gloss - on the wife's black Evo X
HPG - Titanium Gold - gloss - on the wife's Black Evo X
FS2 - Feinheit Silver 2 - gloss - on the wife's white 335
BKB - Burning Black - gloss - on my old gunmetal grey R32 Skyline
MGM - Matt Gumetal - on my grey Evo X
MBL - Matt Black - on my Grey Evo X
PG - Platinum Gold - goss - on the X1
MHG - Matt Titanium (actually bronze) - on my white WRX wagon

Mine is Black Sapphire. I find that in the pictures from Work's website that some silvers look pretty good. But from what I've seen hanging up in the showroom, they look really boring and not bling enough. I've been looking at PG and XG mostly. I'm also considering FS2 and burning silver.

I just want some bling man. I'll be home tonight, so I'll be able to use real internet to get a better look.

After almost 3 weeks of driving the truck around and not getting in the X1, I finally switched back to make the most of what's left of summer. A pleasant, if very different, driving experience I must say

FWIW, I think Burning Black (BKB) would look fantastic on a Black X1. To get a real idea of that colour, you need to take it out into the sun to see how different lighting angles affect things.

I'm with you when it comes to the complete blackout thing, but "Burning Black" isn't black....it's almost a slightly muted dark chrome effect. Very tough to describe really, but definitely not black, despite the name.

I'll look that colour up. I need to see the grille too! The chrome in mine is killing me. So is the terrible job Shadow Tint did in my headlights.... There's more bubbles in it than in a hot tub full of babies with gas

Agreed. The X1 is smaller or similar in size to the X3 and that thing is tiny. Not to bash but honestly it had the more petite female in mind when designed IMO.

X5 or possibly the X6 for folks over 6 ft and from 180-300 pounds.

[quote=skylineguv;14677408]Apologies as I still haven't got that picture taken. Heating the trim piece may work, but you'll only get a small amount of additional clearance by doing this......unless you are removing the plastic rivets as well.

The wheel well carpet is a pain but you may get away without touching it.

Did you ever get that chance to snap a few pics?

Are you trolling? I picked the X1 over the X3 mostly because it has better room for the driver. The X3 has a bigger dash, and I would bash my knee against it. This was a strong deciding factor.
The engine power to weight ratio was the other major decision factor, and the X1 35i wins there.

If anything, I think the X3 and X5 appeal to women as soccer mom cars, while the X1 appeals more to men precisely because there's not a lot of room for children.

I am moving from a 2011 X3 to a X1m sport 35 in Le Mans Blue. I am doing this for 2 reasons. 1 I like smaller vehicles and the second is that the X3 has had a computer problem since an update was done in the summer of 2011.
I feel that this may be one of the last times that we can get a six in the smaller SUVs.
As the fuel economy rules kick in we will see less and less of the higher horsepower engines. Many or the vehicles that I test drove hunted when going up hills in Colorado.
Also the sport seats with the inflatable side bolsters were a must. I tend to push the recommended speeds in the corners and my partner seems to slide in all of the other seats that she is in.

Hello, noob here. I will potentially be a soon X1 owner. I've got a couple of questions for you guys. I'm looking at a 2014 X1 sdrive with the N20 engine. i'm coming form a 2007 mini cooper (Base - normally aspirated). My back problems are just making ingress/egress from the cooper a problem.

I read alot about carbon build up for DI engines. (The nice thing about my cooper it is not a DI engine). Has BMW done anything specifically to address this issue on the N20 or its other engines? If not do you just plan an occasional walnut shell blasting and on what mileage interval? What can be done to help prevent it? You sure can't avoid it, any interesting car seems to be DI these days.

What is the general feeling of the 8 speed auto? I'm coming from a 6 speed manual in the cooper, but that novelty is wearing off. I also drove a new mercedes CLA with a 7 speed DSG tranny. The MB tranny was nice, but I felt the 8 speed in the x1 was the smoother shifting of the two.

Is the gas mileage really as disappointing as I read on this forum. CR's testing shows 32 hwy for the x drive N20. I'm not looking for cooper type mileage, but would like to be able to achieve 30+ on open hwy and the low to mid 20s around town. That would be a massive improvement to my beater 99 CR-V I kept for hauling days. (it's about 20/25 with a zero to 60 of a minute and a half downhill with the wind at your back!)

That's about all my questions for now. I'm looking at a base model X1 in alpine white. The only installed option is heated seats. I want the dealer to install and activate Sirius/Xm. They say that is 500 something. Is that reasonable?

Thanks in advance for any guidance forum members may have!!

Traded a Clubman S with manual for the X1 28sdrive. We used to get about 33 hwy in the Clubman S and about 30 in the X1 both at 75-80. In the same route around town which is all short stop and go we got 26.5 in the Clubman S and about 21 in the X1.

Why do you keep trolling this site, the last time you said you were "trading up to a Tahoe or Suburban". The person that buys an X1 wouldn't ever, ever, ever cross shop a Tahoe or Suburban. Did you not look at the back seat when you bought it, did you not read any reviews or check the specs of the size? Now you say you will look at an X5? Every comment you have ever made on here is to bash the X1 so why don't you just sell it and move on. If I hated something as much as you hate the X1 I wouldn't be on the X1 website I'd be on the Chevy site. Oh I'm 6'3" over 200 also and played college football and I fit fine in the X1.

If you think the gas mileage is poor in the X1 good luck with the mileage in an X5, you make no sense.

Carbon buildup on DI engines has an easy cure: go WOT every now and then.

Skip the Sirius if you're interested in good quality audio - its fairly mediocre.

The transmission is gorgeous. I could say "gorgeous for a torque converter" but, really it is just a great transmission. I came from VW's dsg, which is faster, but the reality is that the delay between clicking the paddle and the transmission shifting up is barely perceptible, and the difference between 3k rpms at 80mph and something like 2k or so in the X1 is really nice. The only bummer is that it is so common that I can't pretend that it is special like the DSG. That said - it should be easier to find mechanics down the road.

The ZF 8 speed is truly a great automatic slush box. It's far less slushy than any auto I've had in the past. In DS mode the shifts are quick and still relatively smooth. Although in M mode, I find it not nearly as fun as some. Of you have back problems, make sure to get the lumbar supports and sports seats.

Thanks, that doesn't seem to be bad. Is your x1 full broke in, or do you expect that to go up some? How is your driving style, relaxed or stomp it? The mpg thread down below in the forum has scared me a little. So much so that I went back to the BMW dealer and drove the new 2014 328d. Very nice car. Found one guy on fuelly that does just highway driving reporting around 47-49 mpg.

I drive a combination of relaxed and hard and I've been getting over 27 mpg overall. On the highway I've calculated an average of 32+

That's pretty good. I'm still undecided. X1 or 328d. I drove both for a short test run yesterday (5-10 minutes) . I started the run out resetting the mpg counter. I got 23 mpg in the x1 in mixed driving from a cold start, which I felt was good from a cold start and a short run. Driving style was relaxed. The same run in the diesel registered about 38! But documented problems with the n47 give me pause for concern. I really like the seating arrangement in the X1, bu the diesel in the 328d. I wish BMW offered the d in the X1.

Fortunately, or unfortunately, I'm part of the furloghed federal workforce, so I'm just waiting for that to lift before I make my final decision.

Officially ordered my Work wheels yesterday. Mark and I decided to do MHG centers with the anodized lips. 19x9f 19x10.5r. Slightly less aggressive than skylineguv's setup.

And now the 3-4 month wait begins
