My X1 in the mud

Hi Everyone,

A few weekends ago I went up to the highlands to look for snow to try out my new chains.

Did not find any snow low enough

But I did find plenty of mud

Anyway I had to see how I got on taking the X1 through the slush. I am happy to report that I did not get stuck once

You say that you "did not get stuck once".
So, how many times did you get stuck?

BTW, I really like the Ti-Ag colour on the X1.

I did have a spade in the back Oh and I was on M&S tyres.

I have noticed you are rather fond of the colour

You chose White if I remember correctly? Nice colour as well

I do have about 5 layers of carnauba wax on it which lightens the colour a bit.

You are welcome. No "car wash station", I hand wash my cars once a week on average. No-one else touches them as they just muck up the paint job.

Thanks Probably because there was no wheel spin and I took it veeeeery slooooowy. It was a test for me to see whether there was a chance that the X1 could get stuck. Got through the thick stuff without any problem so left it there. Most of our farm tracks are nothing like the mad goat tracks I have been on in Africa.

Hi Mario486, since I'm thinking about the 20d, with occasional driving in slush and snow, did you conclude from the mud that you won't need chains this winter i.e. that the 4x4 with M&S tyres would be enough? Another question... do the M&S tyres wear fast (did you change to them just for your "photo shoot" trip? Cheers,

Hi Barbel,

I have a set of chains as well but did not need them. The tyres work well enough without them and I only suspect that I would need chains in extreme gradients with hard ice. I did plenty of driving in heavy snow last winter with no problems at all.

Those pics were taken after the snow had melted and I was just testing traction in mud. The tyres I have are rated for mud and snow (M&S) and are designed for road temps below 7C. I fitted them in November and changed back to my summer tyres at the end of May.

Lastly I cannot comment on tyre wear as I only did about 3000km in them and really cannot see any wear. They are quite a soft compound so I would say Yes, they would wear fast in hot weather.

Yep, it's pretty good considering this is a car that drives like a sedan. I have said it elsewhere, the only thing that would stop me on the right tyres is if the mud or snow gets too deep. Or I suppose extremely rough terrain where the approach/depart angles get too steep. But if that's what you have to get through buy a Landcruiser or Hilux.

Seesh, I wish I had the four-wheel drive transmission. With sDrive you always have to measure thrice and cut once before you get into the mud.

Actually EH, I was amazed at how much was down to tyres. The 4x4 on the summer Pirelli Cinturato's is pretty rubbish. The tyres are brilliant on-road but off-road they have very little grip. Too much radial tread and very little cross tread for grip. In fact I had them on in the early snow we had and was slipping all over the place.

Changed to the winter Dunlops and a completely different experience.
