Annoying rattle at start up
During my quest to purchase a 2015 X1 xdrive 28i, I noticed that everyone I started had a rattle on start up that disappeared. It sounded like a heatshield or catalytic cover rattling. The car I purchased also does it and I am wondering is this unique to all the 2015's?

It's the linkage for the wastegate.
Number 2 in the picture. All of the 28i's do it till it warms up, some worse than others. |

Check your muffler..the exhaust flag mechanism can cause a rattle too. I "cheated" this by zip tying the vacuum line to the flapper mechanism..no more rattle. Stick your head out the door while starting and see if the rattle comes from the rear or under the engine

One of the many reasons I'm starting to think this car was a bad idea. |

The rattle, as you mentioned, is definitely coming from my exhaust. Can you please be more specific as to what the exhaust flap mechanism is and where is the vacuum line that I should zip tie. Thanks in advance Last edited by 2quik; 03-20-2018 at 06:37 AM.. |

If you look on the driver side of the trunk area, there is a tray..pull-up on that tray and you will see a valve with vacuum lines. Once you see it you will understand what to do.

I'm super upset that BMW can't figure this out. 2 dealers, and both say it's normal. This car was 50k new, and it's still under warranty, I shouldn't have a rattle that sounds like nails in a tin can when I start it up. |

Don't get excited, I've "fixed" this three times before... heat mitigation for my solutions seem to be the problem.
So far I've tried: High temp silicon - failed aluminum spacers - failed silicon mat - failed Now I'm on to a carbon/graphite felt washer... |

Interesting. What about those puck's you can put to seal exhaust leaks. They are similar to what you're talking about, but solid. You can make waskers out of them with a hole saw. Where are you putting these solutions. What is actually rattling. The linkage? |

KiloThree,
Just checking in. Waiting for a write up or explanation. I started my car in front of a client today, and he asked me if my car was "okay". He's from the parent company in Germany, and BMW's over there "don't rattle". |
