Surface Rust on Rotor Hats

Does anyone else experience this on their X1? Over the course of any season, I get a film of rust over the circumference of beveled part of the hat itself. Nothing under the wheel or anywhere else. On the braking surface after it gets wet and sits a while, sure, that's normal. I've just never had it on the hat on any car I've had.

I have Zimmerman blanks up front and OE in the rear (although I have Zimmerman blanks and Akebono pads waiting to be installed). It happens on both. I don't get this on my Moupe which see the same weather and road conditions, excluding winter since it goes into hibernation.

I'm tempted to paint that part of the hub but was wondering how common this is. Even my wife's 2003 Oldsmobile doesn't do this.

When mine start to look shabby, I sand/wire brush off the rust and apply Rust-Oleum silver paint.

Thanks, guys. I wonder why they do that. I could see if it was something with just the OE set of rotors/pad compound, but it isn't.

Guess I'll end up painting mine, too. m1256 , are you using high temp paint?

Just depends on the car and weather I think. I get this on most of my vehicles, german or otherwise, up here in the midwest.

I've had really good luck with rust oleum caliper paint. I like black over the factory silver, as well.

Midwest here as well; I've just not had this before and my Moupe is fine. Maybe that means I'm taking it out of hibernation after all the salt has washed away (hopefully).

I had to take the wheels off to bleed the brakes so I guess that'll be the time to paint the hats. Kinda want to do the calipers, too.

Thanks, guys! Crawling back in my lurkers cave now...

How well does it hold up? I'll have to check a different Home Depot (or Auto Zone) for silver since the one I was at on Saturday only had high temp in matte and gloss black. I ended up w/ a can of high temp matte black, regular metallic silver, and some metal primer.

Since the roads get salted here in the winter, I'm wondering if painting the hats will be an annual event.

im in Florida, 3 years so far just starting to fade and perhaps redo this fall. I use alot of wheel cleaner so that may have something to do with it.
