225/45-17 ok for winter tires?

I have the X1 X-Line. OEM wheels are 225/45-18. Thinking of going to 17's for winter and can get 225/45-17 on the used market...wheel offset is fine, but will I regret the loss of 1" diameter of the wheel? I know the speedo will be off and that is not a concern.

Your odometer will also run faster, so for example if it is lease you will lose some of your mileage allowance. Based on my calculation the odometer will show 10000 miles for 9600 miles driven.

For most the reason for going to 17" (vs 18") is to get better wheel clearance for bumps in the road. With those tires you would negate that.

Any reason why you don't want 225/50-R17? They have more sidewall, and are better suited for winter use.

Indeed the 225/50-R17 size is what TireRack recommended for best snow performance and minimal speedometer error.

Just that the 45's are more available on the used market.

Just because you can buy incorrectly sized tires doesn't mean that you should...
