Valve clatter?

Had to run in and out of the 'burgh today for some medical stuff, and I had the radio off as my wife and I were talking.
I noticed what seemed like valve clatter without the radio to mask it.
Anyone familiar with what I'm talking about?
Is it a problem?
Thnx,
Moon

Moon, many have mentioned valve clatter which is heard mostly at idle.

Even though I hear almost no clatter, I asked BMW service about adjusting valves while they were checking camshaft on the recall, and they acted like valve adjustment is not necessary.

Valves can run tight and burn valves so clatter means some might be loose and not really much of a problem if others are not tight.

I'd get them to adjust next time you can take in, just to ease your mind.

Are you sure what you're hearing is valve noise and not the fuel injectors?

My engine has always been noisy. Figured it was just the way it is.

Direct injection is noisy. The clicking you are hearing is the pulsing of each fuel injector.

The BMW N20 is not a sexy sounding engine by any means. Sounds worse than an average rental car fleet 4 banger.

Only when it is cold, once warmed up, there should be no noise coming from it.

The HPFP still sounds like a diesel at idle even when warm, it's just the nature of the system. True on any DI engine, but BMW's system does seem to be a little louder than others.

Our N55 seems a little louder than our previous N54, but then this one hasn't died four times.

Maybe it's because my previous car was a TDI
When I sit at a traffic light with the windows open (during our one week of summer in Vancouver ), I barely hear the engine when it is warm.
