Staggered setup messing with my xDrive?!

Hi guys

I bought 219m M3 wheels for my 2012 X1 28I/xDrive. Here are the spec of the wheels
8,5x18 front ET 29 11,70
9,5x18 back ET 23 12,60

I saw some poster here with those and fell in love. I did my researchs before hand to make sure my staggered setup was within the %range that xDrive allows.

My tires are
Continental dws
245/40r18 front and 275/35r18 back.
Diameter 653.2mm / 649.7mm
Difference in Diameter: percentage = -0.46% actual = -0.14in (-3mm)

I am below the 1% recommended.

My xDrive still act weird. When accelerating from a complete stop it shakes (give littles successive "shakes"), but when cruising on the highway, for example, all is fine..

Do someone know what May be up with this? It doesn't do it with my winter setup, wich is square

Thanks guys.

I bought a 245/275 setup last month and my X1 was not running fine. KiloTHREE said there ´s no problem with a setup like that... But I changed for 225/255 and now my X1 is running great. I just put my 225/225 winter wheels setup on and the car has the same great feeling. 245/275´s won't work on mine. Maybe X1 from US vs. Canada aren't the same regarding tolerance ???

Must be a maple syrup thing.
I ran 215/50/18 in the front and
225/45/18 in the rear for two weeks while I was having tire salesperson problems, whole 'nother story... no problems at all and that's something around 1.5-2% difference.

An interesting question is:

Should fronts be the ones that are slightly smaller?

I would assume since it's RWD bias, but I don't know enough about xdrive. Getting good information, not sales speak, on xdrive is difficult at best it seems.

Can you describe further? The "xDrive" is shaking? What does that mean? What are you feeling, exactly.

I'm french so it's hard to explain... From 0 to maybe 10mph, when accelerating from a complete stop like I said, the car seems to stumble (dont know if this is the right Word.) almost feel like I would really quickly and very Lightly hit the brake pedal 3-4 times. Sometimes it's worst and Sometimes It doesn't seem to do it. Seems worse when I goes Lightly on the gas and better when I accelerate faster

It stumble 3-4 times and after that all is fine, weater I Cruise at 30 mph or 100 mph..

Thanks btw for taking of your time.

Maybe the control of XDrive is more precise. It's a theory, but one thing is sure: I had trouble with a 245/275 setup. It was shaking when under acceleration, downshifting of the transmission was eratic, shifting was harsh and in reverse, there was a strange mechanical sound when turning with steering completly turned on one side. Nothing with 225/255 setup.

Garage List
The only thing that will mess with x-drive is tire circumference difference. I can't see how staggered can cause this.

Pareil pour moi. Mais Firestone avait une garantie de satisfaction de 30 jours. J'ai été vraiment chanceux.

If your Continental were brand new, you have a 30 days also to return them

Makes sense because I don't run my tpms sensor on my aftermarket rims. But can you recode it?

I had spacers for a staggered look. 7.5mm front 15mm rear. A week after I put them on I blew my transfer case. Took off the spacers. Then I had the dealer put a new transfer case in under warranty I had 80k on my 2013. The x-drive act 35l transfer case is sensitive.

Many of us have coded our cars to either simply remove the TPMS system, or to remove the TPMS system and add the wheel-speed based system in.

I can't image a scenario where a 1% variation in OD would cause the car to shudder and stumble, and wouldn't flash a TC light or something at you.

That kind of minor diameter difference is probably found on 50% of cars out there just due to uneven F/R tire wear.

Very true. My staggered OEM 19" setup is already off by approx. 2/32 (-0.06" / -0.23%) with 4 brand new tires. BMW does not recommend tire rotation, and have rear biased AWD, so uneven tread wear is somehow expected. so even staggered, with 4/32 thread wear difference, you are still bellow the 1%.
