Driving a time bomb?

I just got notified by BMW that my timing chain and oil pump drive chain now has a "limited warranty extension" to 7years/70,000 miles. I own a 2014 X1 with 128,000 miles. So where does that leave me? I called BMW Customer Relations, they told me it is 7/70,000, and that I can call if I have a problem.Great! So when my engine goes I can call. This must be a common issue if they're extending the warranty, I'm guessing anyone over 70k is SOL

No offense, but nobody extends a warranty out to the miles you are at. This highest I've ever seen anyone extend a factory warranty out to is 100K.

In my case it would be the time limitation that would hit me as I've just hit 37K on my 2014.

That 70000 should be on top of the 50000 new car warranty to a total of 120000 miles. Yours is still above that though.

BMW has an improved replacement parts, why don't they recall vehicles to build customers satisfaction to ease owners confident with their brand. In my case, my vehicle wouldn't hit the 70K miles extended warranty in 7 years so the extended warranty is useless. I won't buy another BMW again given manufactory not fixing an known "ticking bomb" on their engineer oversight...not the most responsible company.

I purchased the extended CPO warranty which gives me unlimited milage for 4 years.

I am not totally up to speed with what exactly the issue is with the timing chain. Is it the guide that goes bad? If it were me, and I had over 100k on the clock, and I enjoyed the X1 and planned on keeping it, I would simply pay a mechanic to replace the guides. I'd consider it preventative maintenance.

Now, some of you might say that it's too expensive, and the dealer wants $3,000 for the job. I'd agree with you, but I would have a private mechanic do the job for 1/2 the price.

I still consider timing chains as a maintenance item. When the chain needs replaced(most recommend 100k), replace the guides too?

Have you seen the list of items not covered under the extended protection plan? I'd be sure to take a look, it's quite lengthy.
